One need look no further than the effort made by the Emergency Response Team at the Celgar ex- pansion site. ERT fire chief Rolf Thomsen said $2,100 was raised for the Castlegar Volunteer Fire Depart- ment’s Christmas Toy Drive. The 10-member team, along with donations from various con- tractors and individuals, raised another $300 for the Royal Cana- dian Legion Branch 170’s food hampers. “We thought we should do something for Christmas,” Thom- sen said. “(Project safety officer) Pat Patterson helped a lot.” Thomsen said the team mem- bers donated their call-out checks for November, which are issued from volunteer time on-call. “November was a really good month,” Thomsen. A donation jar was also set up and even empties and pop bottles were taken in. But the $2,100 wasn’t just tak- en in as cash. The team went ona one-hour shopping spree and blew the works on toys. Castlegar fire chief Gerry Rem- ple said the toys from the ERT was “certainly a boost” He said he’s happy with the overall community response. The local fire department will be accepting toys for its drive until Friday. The legion will be handing out the toys along with its food hampers.
