As many as 250,000 chil- dren a week are still dying in the “quiet carnage” of under- nutrition and infection, says the ninth annual State of the World's Children report. However, the number of deaths among children under age five fell to 16 million in 1980 from 25 million in 1950, the report says. Two million lives have been saved since then in countries such as Afghanis, tan, Ethiopia and Senegal, it add: s. UNICEF calls immuniza- tion the success story of the decade, with 50 per cent of the world’s children now im- munized compared with five per cent 10 years ago. It hopes to raise that to 70 per cent by 1990, Dr. Richard Goldbloom, a member of the UNICEF executive who is a professor of pediatrics at Dalhousie University in Hal- ifax, told a news conference. “Unless you actually go to these places and see what's going on, you have no idea of what is happening or why,” said Goldbloom. TOLL OF HUNGER “Most of us don't realize that measles can be as serious as it is. Over there, it's a big deal because it's superimposed on malnutri- tion. Malnutrition takes a relatively benign disease and turns it into a fatal disease.” UNICEF was formed in 1946 as the United Nations International Child Emergency Fund, initially to help more than 20 million or- phaned or injured children in Ethiopia. It now works in 119 coun- tries as the United Nations Children's Fund. About 75 per cent of its budget comes from governments, the rest from private donations. Of the $463 million raised in 1986, UNICEF Canada contributed $17 million, tops in the world, said Barbara Swetsky, # spokesman for are State of the World's Children report was compiled by researcher Peter Adam- son in Britain for UNICEF's head office in New York City. It says a surge during the past 10 years in the number of television sets and radios in countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Syria and Brazil has made information, about life- saving measures more avail- able. In addition, it says, 60 per cent of the developing world's adults now can read and write, 80 per cent of its children are in school and government services reach almost every community. The report singles out de- hydration from diarrhea as the leading cause of child deaths and says oral re- More day-care VANCOUVER (CP) — The government's new child-care program could re- sult in 20,000 new day-care spaces in British Columbia, says Jim Carter, B.C. deputy minister of social services. More than three million children have been killed in the last 12 months by mea- sles, tetanus and whooping cough and 200,000 have been disabled by polio. However, UNICEF says more than 1.3 million lives are being saved annually because of immuni- zation, which costs about $5 a child. The reports says breast- feeding is one of the most powerful ways of protecting life because mother's milk is more nutritious, more hy- gienic and cheaper than bottled milk. The poorer the family, the greater the dangers involved in bottle-feeding — mixing milk powder with dirty water in an unsterile bottle. More and more countries have been following the International Code of Mar- keting of Breast-Milk Sub- stitutes, adopted in 1981, the report says.
