ents who try to correct a
child's fear can easily make a
serious mistake, says a psy.
chiatrist who has written a
book on the subject.

Parents should not assume
that something major is
amiss when their child de-
velops a fear such as being
alone, says Joel Feiner, a:
sociate professor at psychia-
try at Albert Einstein Col-
lege of Medicine in New
York.

“There are some fears that
are inevitable. No matter
what you do, you child will
still have the fear.”

Traditional approaches
that generally desensitize a
child to the fear are often
useful, but they can miss the
key to the problem: what's
going on in the family that is
leading to and sustaining the
fears, says Feiner.
