Kootenay Savings Where You Belong McGRIFF POWERS WIN Jays inch closer TORONTO (CP) — Fred McGriff had a good idea before "Tuesday night's game that he’d be making trouble for the Chicago White Sox pitchers, Awaiting his turn in the batting cage, McGriff pointed toward a fan's sign draped over the concfete facing in the left field bleachers. In bold red letters the sign read, We Love You George (Bell). **What’s the world coming to?”’ he said with a laugh When the slugging first baseman’s in good spirits, it usually means his tempermental swing is finely tuned McGriff launched two rockets, his 34th and 35 of the season, on a muggy Tuesday night, going back-to-back with Bell in the fifth inning to tie the game, then winning it 3-2 in the seventh with a liner that took the blink of an eye to clear the right-field fence. McGriff now has one mote homer than he had last season “Those two by McGriff were as hard hit as you want to see,"’ said Chicago manager Jeff Torborg The victory, achieved in front of 49,565 people, enabled the Blue Jays to gain a full game on the Baltimore Orioles, leaders in the American League East. The Jays trail by one. With Toronto down 2-0, Bell extended his hitting streak to 20 — one short of a club record and Mike Green well’s league best 21 this season — by hitting a solo homer off Melido Perez with two out in the fifth inning To that point, Perez had spat much of his time on the mound scrambling out of trouble. But McGriff followed by working the count-to 2-0, then he jumped on a fastball and the ball glanced off the Hard Rock Cafe’s window in the third deck GETS PRESENT After the game, McGriff found a present in his locker an invitation for dinner along with a bottle of Mumm’s champagne, courtesy of the Pane in the Glass Club. Two of McGriff’s homers have reached the bar's windows and both times management has responded with the dinner in vitation Donn Pall, 4-5, started the seventh and got two quick outs. But McGriff again waited patiently, this time getting the count to 3-2 before scorching a forkball over the fence in right Toronto starter Mike Flanagan, 7-8, gave up seven hits but no walks in seven innings before being replaced by Tom Henke at the start of the eighth Henke, a key force in Toronto's revival, struck out five of the six batters he faced to record his 14th save Coming off a three-game sweep of the Indians in Cleveland, Chicago jumped ahead 1-0 in the second Playing left, Bell drew a chorus of groans when he lost Carlton Fisk’s routine fly in the lights for a leadoff double Fisk scored on Sammy Sosa's double Sosa stole third but shortstop Tony Fernandez threw him out at the plate attempting to score on a sharply hit grounder After Toronto: squandered a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the inning — to the disdain of Dave Gallagher started the third by grounding a double down the left-field line. He reached third on an in field single and scored on a grounder Junior Felix, No. 9 in'the order, and leadoff hitter Lloyd Moseby combined to go I-for-8, stranding the jam med bases in the second and two runners in the sixth Jays Notes: Thirteen of McGriff’s 35 homers have been hit in Flanagan starts ... a hit tonight will tie Bell with Lloyd Moseby and Damaso Garcia's 1983 club record for hitting in 21 consecutive games ... Toronto tied a club record for wins in August with 18 ... Felix has five hits in his last 42 at-bats; Moseby has two hits in his last seven games the crowd International talent heads for Grand Forks By GUY BERTRAND Staff Writer World-class baseball will only be a short drive away this week as Grand Forks hosts their International Labour Day Baseball tournament Which begins tonight at James Donaldson Park and runs until Sept. 4 Dubbed as Canada’s largest invitational baseball tourney, teams from Canada, U.S., Japan and Taiwan give the tournamenta truly international flavor First prize in the competition will be $8,000 and a number of squads have a legitimate shot at taking home the cash. The 12 teams will be placed in three divisions as they battle fora share of the $20,000 purse. In Division I, the Grand Forks Gold will be looking to improve on the best-ever finish by a host team in last year’s tourney. Teams competing in that division are the NBI (National Baseball Institute) Blues featuring top baseball prospects from across Canada. The Spokane Bulldogs will be returning to the tourney following last year’s early exit and rounding out the division will be the Tahoe Stars representing California Division [1 will feature some of the tourney's heavyweights with Team Japan comprised of Japan's 1989 national champion Prince Hotel squad. The New York Slammers will be making their second appearance at the Grand Forks tournament and looking to rebound from last year’s 10th-place finish. The Seattle Studs, considered one of the most successful tournament teams in the Pacific Nor thwest, will face the Team Japan in the preliminary round in what is expected to be a main event The fourth and final team in Division II will be the Washington State Cougars. A tourney news release couldn't confirm if pitcher-infielder Jon Olerud will be coming with the squad. Olerud recently signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays who made him their third round pick in this year’s draft Division II] will feature teams from four different regions highlighted by Team Taiwan picked as the team to beat in this division. Surrey Sports will represent the home Province in this foursome and they'll be looking to improve their poor showing last year. Their lineup includes Chuck Westgard a former member of Team Canada. Expos drop another as Padres start rolling SAN DIEGO (AP) After six straight wins, the San Diego Padres are just six games back in the NL West But Tony Gwynn says the Padres can’t afford to get caught up in pennant fever just yet “We've gotta take care of ourselves first. We can’t worry about anybody else,” Gwynn said after extending his hitting streak to 13 games in San Diego's 2-1 win Tuesday night over the Montreal Expos The Padres won on Luis Salazar's run-scoring single in the ninth inning to move within six games of division leading San Francisco Giants, the closest they've been since June 9. The Giants have lost four of five, but remain four games ahead of the second-place Houston Astros. Personally, I'm not concerned about the Giants right now,”” Gwynn said. **They haven’t had a rut (before) like they’re in now. We just hope they continue to play bad baseball. We feel like we're going to finda way to win Likewise, Padres manager Jack McKeon said he’s not worrying about trying to catch the Astros and Giants during the final month of the season “I’m not concerned whether we are three games out or six games out. I just want to go out and do the best we can,"* McKeon said ‘lL don’t care about batting averages, I just want them to do the lit Ue things. We're playing good baseball and ... we're playing as a cohesive unit The Expos, meanwhile, fell to four th place in the National League East, four games behind the Chicago Cubs Rookie Rich Thompson, the four th Montreal pitcher, surrendered a leadoff single to Marvell Wynne in the ninth. Benito Santiago sacrificed before Thompson, 0-1, threw a wild pitch to Salazar that moved Wynne to third HIT GROUNDER Salazar followed with a grounder that bounced off the glove of drawn-in shortstop Spike Owen “We've been playing aggressive baseball for the past week or so,” Wynne said. “With Salazar batting, | was going as soon as he made contact He (Owen) probably Would have had a shot at me at the plate but the ball tip- ped off his glove.” Owen said he knew he had to make the play quickly because he saw Wynne break for home as soon as Salazar hit the ball “1 stretched out as far as | could to my right, but he just hit it in the right spot,” he said. ‘*A little bit more get him, and if he pulls hit a little more it goes to Tim (Wallach at third).
