Sunflower by one stroke
over defending champ

A former local boy returned
home to walk away with the 1992
Sunflower Open at the Castlegar
Golf Course.

Randy Kirby shot a three-un-
der 69 Sunday for a two-day total
of 145, enough for a one-stroke vic-
tory over defending champ Brian
De Biasio of Nelson.

“T’ve been trying for 11 years,
and I’ve finally won,” Kirby said
Monday.

Kirby started Sunday’s final 18
a couple strokes back of a group of
four golfers tied for the lead and
one stroke back of De Biasio.

It wasn’t until the par-5 16th
that he punched his way to the
lead. Tied with De Biasio going in-
to the hole, Kirby drained a 50-
foot putt to score and eagle and go
2-up on the defending champ.

“That's the one,” he said. “It put
me up with two holes to play.”

De Biasio agreed.

“He makes eagle, I make par
and that’s the difference,” he said.

Kirby said the secret of his suc-
cess lay in his putter, which he
used like never before. .

“It all depended on the putter,”
he said. “I’ve been known to have

a very poor putter.”

But it wasn’t poor on this day,

to many hours of practice.

“The putter’s been working re-
ally well,” he said. “I think it made
the difference.”

De Biasio, winner of three of
the last four Sunflower’s, said rust
got the better of him.

“I hadn’t played for nine days.
That hurt me a little on Saturday,”
he said. “I wouldn't say I lost it. I’d
say he won it.”

The 1992 Sunflower attracted
228 golfers in seven handicap
flights, and Castlegar golfers did
their course proud.

For the low gross prize, Bill
Perehudoff took first with 148 in
the 4- to 7-handicap group, Ken
Gorkoff won with 157 in the 8- to
10 group and Jim Swanson shot
188 for first in the 21 and over
class.

Winners in the low net catego-
ry included overall winner Gordie
Walker with a 137, while Roland
Handley shot 143 to win in the 17
to 20 group.

Tournament chairman Brian
Turlock said the weekend went off
without a hitch.

“I think it went as smooth as
one could expect from an organiz-
ing standpoint, ” he said, tipping
his hat to Mother Nature for her
co-operation.

“We couldn't have asked for a
more exciting finish.”
