(CP) — Henry- Squirrel, who won $500,000 in a lottery last April, has gone'from luxury hotel suites to a humble cabin in a reckless four-month spending spree. A slight, soft-spoken father of. three, Squirrel was earning $35 a week and wandering the streets of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories when a free ticket. put a half-million-dollar windfall in his pockets. He told a reporter he squandered the money “on the good life,” then asked the reporter for a handout and quickly accepted an offer of a free dinner. Squirrel. 60, lived a life of ease in deluxe suites of hotels in Edmonton and Vancouver. Now he is holed up in a friend's cabin, virtually penniless. “It's all gone; the whole works. But I've still got my condo,” He said he purchased the 31-suite Vancouver apartment building — he can’t remember the address — in July with a down payment of $38,000. Squirrel sdid rings and jewelry for “dates” he met in Edenton. a penchant for leather jackets, $250-a-night el rooms and thousands of dollars given to his family anes his bank account by early August. BUYS PRESENTS Squirrel said Anne, a Vancouver woman he met in the lobby of Edmonton's Cecil Hotel, encouraged him to purchase the condominium at a reduced: price from a friend who wanted to move to the United States- Because she never asked him for'a handout and “helped us out,” Squirrel said he fought Anne “some kind of German car™ for $15,000. He said he bought his daughter Freda a Ford Thunderbird for her 16th birthday, but sold it a few months later because “people were always borrowing it.” Squirrel said street people would harass him and follow him to his bank near the Cecil Hotel. On “five or six” occasions, he said, he was rolled — once for $8,000 — h_he_did_not_report the i to police. _ AVIS ‘@F AST.
