Ald. Doreen Smecher said during Tuesday’s council meeting that the rest of the draft report does not support the suggestion that an alternative to the Castlegar Airport be found. “‘None of what I've read supports this particular statement about a suitable alternative,’’ Smecher said of the draft report which is part of the provincial government’s regionalization initiatives in the Kootenays. “I've supported regionalization from the beginning but to be credible it has to make credible recommen- dations,"’ Smecher said. ‘I don’t think this oneis.”” The draft report, released last mon- th, notes that Castlegar Airport cannot support night operations because of DOREEN SMECHER .. . The bank is running credit checks on Alfredo Leone and his investment company, Leone International, to determine if Leone’s credit rating is strong enough to allow his company to back. a $5-million loan for the film, Stark said Tuesday in an interview ByC Taxidermy business wants to relocate was recommended by the planning and development committee, will be accep- table if he can get financing from KREDA. Bank representative Wayne Drury in Los Angeles on Monday and Stark said he feels confident the deal will go through. But theres still a lot of paperwork to complete, he said, and something con- crete needs to be set by Friday because the actors and director committed to the picture can’t wait much longer to begin filming. “Whether we can pull this thing off in time is the question mark,” Stark said. Stark turned to private investment last week after waiting since April 1 to hear if Telefilm Canada, the federal government's film development agen cy, would provide partial funding for the film it has been backing in development for the last few.years Telefilm was taking too long to decide, Stark said, and his actors and director Charles Jarrott are receiving other offers and getting impatient As well, distribution contracts with American and Canadian companies will collapse if any of the actors or Jarrott leave the project, he said Stark has also sold all his personal assets to fund the film, including his house and car. The situation is “‘rather humiliating,” he said, with the lan- dlord knocking on the door asking for the rent he cannot pay Telefilm director of operations in Vancouver Bill Gray said Stark’s film must wait its turn to be evaluated by theagency If the deal with the bank and Leone goes through, Leone will be made executive or co-producer, Stark said, and he will have an interest in the creative aspects of the picture. However, Stark said he doesn’t ex- pect to lose creative control of the film Leone is well-known as a producer in his own right, Stark added. Everything is ready for the film to begin production, he said, and someone just “supply the fuel, Stark said he is grateful to the people in Castlegar who have supported him and his film. They have ‘‘boosted my morale’’ while he searched for ways to get the project off the ground, he said The film, to be called The Dispossessed and shot partially in the Kootenays, is slated to star Christopher Plummer, his daughter Amanda Plummer, Margot Kidder, Megan Follows, Gary Farmer and Elias Koteas. needs to Staff Writer mind. sonality traits of his client. of quartz crystal he holds to pressions. work than a psychic and clairvoyant By CLAUDETTE SANDECKI Propping the stocking feet of his six-foot-four-inch frame on the edge of his hotel-room bed, Dan Valkos leans back in his chair and prepares to read his client's “There's nothing there,”’ he says with mock in: credulity. ‘I’m getting a busy signal.’” Then he laughs. “Hardly, |he says and proceeds to reel off, with devastating accuracy and total assurance, the key per Valkos has no crystal ball — although he has a piece focus"’ on the person he is reading —no flowing robes and no solemn, serious ex: Dressed in jeans and an open-necked shirt, and obviously at the end of a long day, he looks more like the guy with whom you have a beer in the backyard after But that’s part of his purpose.
