86 Castlegar News August 29, 1990 LIFESTYLES Credit-card debt adds up By ELEANOR WHYTE The Canadian Press After several years of climbing on and off the credit, merry-go-round in Toronto, Hal Negrych realized he and his plastic were better off apart. Negrych, 27, says at one point he racked up a $1,400 debt using his MasterCard for general spending and cash advances. A few months ago, he decided enough is enough. He began leaving his credit cards at home and has slowly whittled his debt to $500. “*(Credit) is the toupee of the finan- cial world,” says Negrych, who now lives in Guelph, Ont. ‘‘It makes you look good, but you mess up once and your cover is blown."” Despite interest rates ranging bet- ween 20 per cent and 29 per cent, credit cards are an integral part of our financial lives. Figures from the federal Depar- tment of Consumer and Corporate Affairs show: * Between 1978 and 1988, the num- ber of Visa and MasterCards in Canada doubled to 19.4 million. © Last year, there were 500 million Visa and MasterCard transactions with a dollar value of $30 billion. © Less than half of credit card users paid off their monthly statements in full in '89, and this year interest charges on outstanding balances are expected to reach $1 billion. ADVICE rescheduling payments, Hastings said. Cc agree that even after “*You have to cut (expenses) in a way that they don’t feel deprived," Brown says. ‘‘! tell clients to explain to older kids. Some of the kids come up with amazing ideas for saving."’ It’s also possible to work out in- clearing their credit debt, consumers should use their credit cards carefully. “Use it if you have to rent a car, if you're on the highway and your car breaks down and needs repairs," said i hot. an extension of dividual with credi involving consolidating loans or BUSINESSE TELEPHONE 365-5210 sivas: Perhaps the best reaso card balances by the due date is found on the back of the monthly statement where interest charges are outlined. And for those who criticize high credit-card interest rates, Hastings has a bit of advice: “They (creditors) give blow your brains out.” New insertions, . copy ch us. Res. 365-2694 Jack L. Brown CERTIFIED GENERAL ACCOUNTANT 270 Columbia Avenue Castlegar ¢ 365-2151 (Credit) is the toupee of @ financial world. It makes you look good, but you mess up once and your cover is blown.’ — credit card holder Hal Negrych So how do you know if you have the credit-card blues? Credit counsellors point to danger signs such as month after month only paying the minimum due each Statement, or falling behind on payments. There are also clues in how you use your card. “If you go to the drugstore for a bottle of shampoo and you bring out the old plastic, that’s a danger sign,"’ said Sam Hastings, executive director of the Metro Toronto Credit Coun- selling Service. The first step to getting out from under a pressing debt, credit coun- sellors say, is to get rid of the cards, at least temporarily. “Put credit cards in the freezer or return them to the company,” says Hastings, ‘‘because if you have it on you, you’re going to be tempted to use it and you’re just going to be ad- ding to your debt load.” The second step is to realistically assess how much money is coming in and how much has to go out every month Zoran Maksimovich, of Win- nipeg’s Community Financial Coun- selling Services, said people tend to set an unrealistically tight budget to pay off the débts, thus creating even bigger problems when the budget inevitably fails. Joyce Brown, director of Ontario’s Credit Counselling Access Line, Canada’s only telephone credit coun- selling service, uses a familiar analogy to make thé same point. “If you’re going on a diet, you cannot eliminate any one type of food or it’s not a sound diet.”’ Brown suggests the whole family discuss how to change spending habits because repaying debts can be a long and frustrating process — up to three years in some cases.
