With a fourth place overall BCCAA standing the Saints had F 1 Playoffs at Langley’s Trinity Westem University. “This toumament was impor- tant for establishing the playing order heading into the playoffs,” said coach Gerry Fraser. “You want to charge in, not go in back- wards,We were the only team at there that didn’t lose a game.That’s really positive.” Selkirk played to a 3-1 defeat of Victoria’s Royal Roads Military College in their first match of the tourney and defeated Colombia Bible College 3-1 in the second. In their final match Selkirk handed Douglas an embarrassing Celgar Pulp Co. Womens volleyball season over By BRENDAN HALPER Sun staff writer The Selkirk Saints Womens Volleyball team finished a tough 1990-91 season at ninth spot in the BCCAA standings. For the past three years the Saints have had trouble finding enough players who are willing to commit themselves to the team. They folded at Christmas 1988 and lost players due to a lack of interest throughout the 89/90 season. season was a rough one,” said ¢oach Mike Perra.”"We were fighting to see if we had a whole team, but for the first time in at least two years we finished the sea- son with more players than we started with. We started with seven and ended with nine.” The Saints suffered a crushing 3-0 loss to Cariboo College during the Feb.22/23 tournament at Selkirk College. “The loss was disappointing * because we came out flat and gave the game away,” said Perra. However, Selkirk was able to finish the season on a strong:note by taking one game from top- ranked Douglas College. “We gained respect from the other teams for never giving up,” said Perra. "There was individual player improvement throughout the team in all aspects of game philos- ophy. The players who stuck with us all year have shown character.” Coach Mike Perra has already begun recruiting for the 91/92 sea- son's team. “Already next years team is taking shape. Twelve teams participated in the First Annual Junior Fun Spiel held at the Castlegar Curling Club on Sun- day, Feb. 24. ‘The curlers, ranging in ages from 11-18 came from Trail, Nelson, Beaver Valley, Rossland and Castlegar. The loss comes on the heels of an embarrassing 11-1 pasting by Beaver Valley on Saturday, “Yesterday’s game was tough. ‘We were somewhat overpowered by their size,” said Castlegar Coach Rich Davis. “After yester- day’s loss we came out and played good hockey, and although we came up short against Grand Forks, we never gave up,” A shorthanded goal at 10:14 of the ‘Castlegar’s David Evdokimoff opened the scoring at 2:05 when he capitalized on a play set up by Ryan Davis. | Brian McCormack, assisted by Brad Abletkoff and Scott Carison ° gave Castlegar a short lived 2-0 lead at 7:36.
