Mr. ‘Thompson was in the race long enough to find out that he has many warm per- sonal friends, who would be glad to be- stow the honor of being mayor of Ross- land upon him. The two cities “are very closely connected in a business way, and a visit ‘by the business men of Spokane will re- sultin an increase of interest in our |’ mines and mining stocks. Rossland must do her whole duty in not only en- ‘couraging them to come, but by receiv- ing ged. entertaining them while here. As. soon as possible the approximate number who will come should be ascer- tained and suitable arrangements made to care for them. The carnival commit- tee will have its hands full with other matters,s0 there should bea special committee to look after the visitors. The mayor and city council should in- ‘vite the mayor and aldermen of Spokane and see that they. are well cared for. The board of trade should invite the chamber of commerce and look after ita members when they come. The differ- ent societies and churches should make special invitations and make special ar- rangements to take care of their visitors. If this suggestion is followed, 1,000 peo- ple willcome to Rossland onthe pro- posed excursion and the event will be one never to be forgotten. ——— The withdrawal of Ross Thompson as candidate for mayor was no surprise to the general public or to his close and particular friends. Mr. Thompson should know his own business best, and Sf it is, as he says, that hie personal and private interests preclude him from giv- inga great portion of his time to the ogan pared to do all work in his Jine promptly Ls the lowest living prices, Money can be saved by patronizing him. tf Mra. Tho action of the labor unions and sa- loons in endorsing Mayor Wallace for re-election seems strange at this time, before the issues of thy campaign are madeup.. Mr. Goodeve, who is now proposed as a candidate tur moyor, has stood by the working people as faith- fully as they could ask. Their interests would be as safe in his hands as in the hands of any man in Rossland. It, how- ever, does’ not make so much difference Wallace or Mr. Goodeve is elected, and for that reason they shonld not have taken an active part in the fight for mayor. The action of the saloon men is stran- ger still, They will probably regret this hasty step before the election ig over, and may regret it sadly ‘afterwarde, Some of them were farseeing enough to warn their brothers in the meeting, and others epeak outopenly and refuse to support Mr..Wallace. They claim that Mr. Wallace as mayor bas allowed gam- bling to be done. at the Internationa when it has not been allowed elsewhere. They have other grave objections to the conduct of that ropular place of resort, and were in hopes of being able to look to the mayor and city council for relief the coming year. As the saloon men do not agree rnmong themselves about just what they want, we repeat that it ie strange that they didates are in the field and their views have been ascertained upon the ques- tions that particularly interest them.
