Not content with promising the impossible, Mr. Curtis circulates, and allows his committee to circu- late, lies about his opponent. One lie is no sooner nailed than another is sprung on the electors, apparent ly in the hope that somebody will be deceived by them. Governor Mackintosh was accused of opposi tion to the eight-hour law; he was proved to have insisted on the en- forcement of the law and to have suggested the very method: of set- tlement of the labor difficulty: which was ultimately adopted. No politi- tical party can claim credit for that settlement, for it was suggested by Governor Mackintosh and adopted by the miners through the persua- sion of Ralph Smith, who was brought here by Mr. Curtis after that gentleman’s efforts had failed to accomplish anything. Governor Macki: hh was also d of en- mity to union labor; this was proved a lie by the testimony of the labor unions in Ottawa whose battles he - had fought. He was accused of fa- voring Oriental labor; he disposed of this by proposing far more prompt and effective measures. for shuttirig out the Asiatics than any which had been put forward by his opponents. The latest lie was nailed yester- day by ex-mayor James Reilly of Calgary. Mr. Curtis’ committee published a campaign circular. ac- cusing Mr. Mackintosh of extrava- gance and mismanagement of the Northwest fair held at Regina while he was governor of the Northwest Territory. Mr. Reilly himself took an active part in the management of the fair and therefore knows something about it. He shows that the fair showed a deficit finan- cially for the very good reason that nothing was left undone to make it a complete display of the products and resources of the vast area of the d to work in factories, and I cantile amount of capital required. Address Merchant, this office. Only a_ small tf think it a very unwise policy to pro- ]. mote ill-feeling between mine-own- ers and miners simply for purposes of embittering either side aod thus secure votes. The man who has the interests of the people at heart will never do this, and he who does is a poor adviser as well as an un- patriotic citizen. In Rossland the mine-owners and miners arrived at an understanding; in fact an eight- hour Jaw has been virtually remov- ed from the arena of politics, do- mestic or otherwise, and Iam _ con- fident that every reasonable miner will be only too glad to assist in preventing further misunderstand- ings on a basis of mutual agree- ment. I did not hesitate to advo- cate this weeks before I dreamed of being a candidate in'the Rossland riding. Besides, it must be re- membered that I have no connec- tion whatever, direct or indirect, with the British-America corpora-| tion, the Le Roi company, or any mines in the Rossland district. “The gravest blow that could be ini: to my businéss is a dispute between mine-owners ‘and miners. The Recorp long ago recommended the contract system as the best settlement of the eight- hour question. - Governor Mackin- tosh recommended the same settle- ment. When the same recommen- dation was made by Ralph Smith and R. C. Clute, the miners adopt- edit. It has now beenin operation for over a month and both parties are satisfied with it. The miners are making more money and the mine-owners are getting more work done in a given time than under the old system. It has séttled the eight-hour question and removed it from the arena of practical poli- tics. Only demagogues and those who are throwing dust in the eyes of the people pretend that it is an issue in the present campaign. —_ EDITORIAL NOT Thanks to Mr. Martin s blunder- Northwest.
