ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, AUGUST 13 1900 TRAIL NOT IN IT The Stars Come Within an Ace of Shutting Out Smelter Team, BAD ACCIDENT TO LEVIS His Collar Bono Broken By Collision With a Trail Man—Costallo and Leighton Win the Honors for the Stars—The Score Jn Detail, The’ heavy” rain in. the early part of the afternoon yesterday kept many people from witnessing the deteat, administered the Smelter baseball team of Trail by the Star ball team. of this city, at the ball park. Those present, though lim- ited in number, were full of enthu- siasm, and each good play, and there were several, was loudly cheered. The game was Rossland’s from the start, Trail at no time being within hailing distance. In fact they. should have been shut out, their tone run being due to a hit by pitcher, a passed ball, a wild pitch, aod a bad throw from catcher to second after the runner had reached third. The visitors showed a de- cided lack of practice, some of their errors being very raw. Darah pitched fairly but his support at times was miserable, (The: features of the game were Coltatta’ 's pitching, he having seven striké “outs to his credit and al. lowing but four hits, and Leighton's faculty for purloining bases. An unfortunate accident in the third inning put Capt. Levis of the Ross- land team out of the game with a fractured collar bone. He was covering second and was run into by a Trail runner trying to steal second base. A. carriage was im- mediately summoned and he was ‘taken to town where the fracture was’ reduced. ANSWER TO GHINA eee 4 Terrible Mistake New, York, August 13.—The Evening World today has adispatch dated Chefoo, August 9, signed by Frederick Palmer, telling of a ter- rible mistake at the taking of Yang Tsun, The dispatch says the Rus- sian artillery opened fire on the American troops. Before the mis- take was discovered, many Ameri- can soldiers: had been killed or wounded by the Russian fire. As the Chinese, fled, the regiment entered and occupied one of the Chinese positions. A Russian bat- tery some distance off did not notice the movement. It opened fire on the position, and planted shells among the American troops. The Russians were quickly notified and ‘ceased their fire. The Americans captured the Chinese works. Their casualties are estimated at 70 alto- gether. Most of these are in the Fourteenth’ infantry. The long march and the heat played havoc with the troops, continues the cor- respondent. Forty per cent of the Ninth regiment was completely .ex- hausted as a_ result of the march and the fight that followed. - The allied force is resting at Yang Tsun for two or three days. Then it is to be a rush forward on Pekin. The-Chinese are demoralized by their defeats and no rest or chance to recover from their demoraliza- tion is to be given them by the al- lied troops, Three Berlin, August 13.—The Catholic paper Germania says it learns that altogether 10 out of 50 missionaries inthe vicarate of Southwest PeChi Li have been murdered and-that 3,000 converts have suffered the same ways” OR MENTION Charles H.
