It was expeoted that the act in- conporating Rossland ould ‘yester- day becemé‘a law, but it did not pass the'third’ ‘reading no reason being given’save that a motion to wijourn was carried at the time the bill was to come up. Itis fair to presume that the motion was made in obedience with the instructions| from some. persons opposed to -the ‘present form. of the act,-and it is not at all unlikely: that-some one in: Roseland’ had gto do ‘Withit. +A telegrain‘was‘sent from here Saturday'by a ‘political gang asking that the clause fixing the qualifications of mayor be changed to make‘it necessary for a candi- date for that offiee to be a regis- terod property hulder for only 14 days. Itwould be as -well forall ambitious candidates to un- d d that if they d in ob- taining a change in the act to make some one eligible and thereby cause delay in incorporation, that they will have toanswer for it at the polls with defeat. The scene opened with the full of Candamio, the Crete insurgents wresting a victory from the Mus- sulmans. An appeal has. been made by the defeated to the powers for assistance. An Interesthhg Account of the Sale of the War Eagle. Patrick Clark, of Spokane, in a re- cent interview with a Toronto paper gave an interesting account of the sale of the War Eagle mine. He considered it was only fair to Mr. Gooderbam to make a statement, in “view of. ‘the malicious reports that had been. cir- culated. s “I may say in the first place,”” said Mr. Clark, ‘that the War Eagle com- pany of Spokane became the owneia. of the mine on December 3, 1894. Prior to that time two bonds had been given on the property, and were thrown up because it was a failure, The mine wasa goed property, however, and yielded a profit tous of about $250, 000. On the Ist of May, 1896, the Property was bonded to D.C. Corbin of Spokane for threa months, . and’ he in turn attempted to place it with a company known a the British Colam- bia Gold Fields, limited. © ‘The latter had three examinations made, ‘éach of which was faverable, but notwith- standing this. ‘the’-company © failed’ to come to time. ‘Mr. Corbin then asked for an extension uf 60 days, which- was given, and he induced what is known as tie London War Eagle company of Rossland to interest themselvea in the |' Propeity.
