On Weekend Castlegar's Five Minus One entry in the Columbia Valley Winter Festival's Bowl. spiel won top prize money of $200 for a first-place finish in the A event .at Community Bowl in Trail during the weekend, The ‘rink’ consisting of Miss MeIntee is a very smart lady. (Being a counsellor as well as a P.E, teacher certainly makes for quick think- ing!) She noticed that our audio- visual machine was not being used, and so she appropriated it for her gym classes, With Mr Sheppard's aid, she mastered the critter and told her girl students that each of them was to work out a routine on the balance beam for to the class, Dennis Diane Si- doni, Don Sidoni and Mike Glendenning finished ahead of Nelson's Missing Links, Dana's of Castlegar and Osoyoos. The Missing Links picked up $100 as runner-up, Winning $120 for clinching the B event title was the Kootenay Soft Drinks team of Bob Hansen, Jim Ripplinger, Wally Burns and Ken Crane of “ Trail. They were followed by the Ding Bats of Castlegar, Tri-hards of Trail and Fruitvale No. 1. Ding Bats collected $60. The 4. P's of Trail com- ‘prised of Linda and Stan Popp and Art and Marlene Pompu captured the C’event’and $100,” ahead of the Golden Agers of Trail, Family Affair of Trail and Team Toyota of Nelson. The Golden Agers won $40, Judy Buhler of Trail won the high single with a 338 and triple- with 769 from among those out of the money. In the men's section, Russ Olsen had the high single with a 334 and high triple. went to Rudy Swirsky of Kimberley with 842, There were 34 teams entered in the bowlspiel, two more than last year. ‘The girls were all filmed in the performance of their rou- tines, and last week they had the opportunity to see them- selves on “TV” (as it were). They have never had such a graphic lesson! Everyone sat in rapt attention and everyone learned reams, Now a. dozen ideas are bubbling in our minds for further use a.v. aids... Who'll go next? es 8 8 We should perhaps have a close-up of our students’ hands as they cope with spelling words! Last’, week.,.Jean David dictated the word “accelera- tor." Only 29 students in the ‘whole schoo! survived that one! You should have seen some of the efforts! Samples are placed on the display board which is headed “Recognize Yours" These were the most common errors: “excellerator", “eccellerator”, “axecellerater", “accellorater'.” There was even an “ixcyl- leraterer”, and an “axleator.” Danny Barnes was the winner of the draw; but bets 9PM. — ARENA CURLING CLUB OPEN DANCE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7th $2.50 Per Couple Music by Dick Wayling 1 AM, HALL Robinson vs Wright vs A. Two bits, Danny! . . We've been asking the teachers if they could tell us some little memory jingles that: they were told in their early schooldays—something that sticks in their minds and can't be erased. Mr. Sang had a teacher who taught him how to spell geography. “George Edward's old grandfather rode a pig home yesterday.” Mr. Roulstone was taught in Ireland to spell both *Misets- sippi" and “Londonderry” cor- rectly by matching the eleven letters of each with a similar rhythmic stress. Mr. Nelson never’ forgot “all cows eat grass" (for the spaces in the bass cleff) and “snafu” (situation normal—all fouled up!) Another teacher was taught the “knuckle” way of remembering the number of days in each month. . . You simply make a fist and look at your four knuckles (thumb is tucked down.under),. Touch each knuckle and each hollow, in turn, saying “January, February, March, _ April, May, June, July." Now start back again touching the July one again: “July, August, September, October, Novem- ber, December.” Each “knuckle” month has 31 days in it, Each “hollow* month has 30 (or fewer, in the case of February). Fast and simple! Everyone knows: “14 hun- dred 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” But Mr. Clark said it was a sad day for him when he told his grade 4 teacher: “14 hundred 93, Columbus sailed the deep blue sea.” Somehow he never did cotton to history after that. * 8 Our skiers hit the slopes last Wednesday led by the indomitable Mr. Long. (Mr. Gerrand, Mr. Sheppard, Mr.” Rogers and Mr. Medvedoff are the other sponsors.) One and all had a great time pretending they were as “good as Felix Beleyzk. (Good tek inthe e competitions, Felix!)
