In 1928 he wrote a book recalling his first ineredibly— full-three years of life pioneer- ing-the West Kootenay. Picard travelled up and down the Columbia River and Arrow Lakes, _ prospecting, trading and exploring. He.met all the men of the day and observed first-hand the events that changed the West Koote- nay from wilderness to a habited mining and forestry hub. i : He wrote near, the close of ' his account: a “But now (in the year 1888) the old-timer days are over. Revelstoke has settled down. Three of the hotels had‘ girls waiting on tables. The other hotels had young men decked up in white coats. Pork and beans were seldom found. Dinner would be soup, roast beef, mutton, pudding, cakes, Pies, Tin plates and cups were thrown over the river bank, “And the old-timer had lost his home, the bar-room, The bar-room has been used as a bar-room, parlor, sitting room, a dance hall and a washroom. Ail this has changed, The bar was for drinking only, If one did not drink he was not wanted there.” Picard was a remarkably astute observer of man and events and his reminiscences are cherished. Other early visitors (fur traders, prospectors, survey- ors, travellers) left fascinating accounts of life in the West Kootenay, Craig Andrews, the in- structor, has spent many years gathering archives and study- ing and teaching the history of the West Kootenay.
