Kodak signed for Olympics CALGARY (CP) — Org- anizers of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary announ. ced Tuesday they have sign ed a second major corpor. ation, Kodak Canada Inec., on the road to raising $50 million in corporate sponsorships. Coca-Cola Ltd. was the first company to forge formal links with the Calgary Ga mes, signing a contract last December that continued a 46-year sponsorship history with the Olympics. Coca-Cola and Kodak ask. ed that financial details of their agreements to be kept secret. But Bill Wardle, the organizing committee's vice- president of marketing, pre- dicted earlier that Olympic sponsorships could be worth as much as $5 million each. Sponsorships at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Mon- treal sold for only a fraction of that amount, with two official groups competing to sign hundreds of companies. But Calgary organizers are following a pattern esta- blished at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, when only about 30 official sponsorships were issued — making each exclusive and thus more valuable. Calgary organizers acquir- ed the right to recruit spon sors after signing a deal last December with the Canadian Olympic Committee. That body normally holds all mar keting rights to the Games, Charlie Says COHOE INSURANCE 1127-4th St., Castlegar but it signed them away in return: for the first $30 million in sponsorship rev- enues from the Winter Games. The deal came a few months later than expected and Wardle, in an interview after Tuesday's news con- ference, said the delay put him behind schedule in his hunt for sponsors. The total sponsorship pac- kage, besides providing $30 million for the Olympic Ass- ociation, is expected to pro- vide another $20 million for staging the Winter Games. But that estimate is con- tained in an 18-month-old financial plan that has al ready proven to be pessim istic. The organizing committee is also counting on about $200. million in federal funds and $31 million from ticket sales. Goods, services and capital projects provided by the federal and Alberta govern- ments and the City of Cal- gary have not been fully calculated. A letter of agreement signed Tuesday, which pre- cedes a formal contract later this month, makes Kodak the Winter Games’ official photo- graphic consultant — supply- ing hundreds of rolls of films and mammoth processing fac- ilities. De Wit faces big test GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. (CP) — Willie de Wit will get his first major test since the Olympics when he fights on the Thomas Hearns-Marvin Hagler undercard April 15 in Las Vegas. De Wit, from Grande Prai- rie, Alta., will take on a higher calibre opponent and will have to deal with the pressure of fighting before a worldwide closed-circuit tel evision audience. Irving Rudd of New York, publicist for Top Rank Box- ing, promoters of the middle- weight title fight at Caesar's Palace, confirmed Tuesday that de Wit will fight on the card. His scheduled opponent for the six-round heavyweight bout is 27-year-old Charles Hostetter of Odessa, Tex., a six-foot-two, 205-pounder with a 13-2 record and seven knockouts, Rudd said. “Hostetter is a legitimate opponent,” Rudd said. “He's no tomato can.” Hostetter won 13 consec utive fights after he started his pro career in 1980 but lost both fights he had in 1984. This will be great exposure for him.” Ruddd said he hopes de Wit will increase closed-cir cuit ticket sales in Canada. “We think he'll add some- thing different,” he said. “In Vegas the week of the fight, everybody will get tired of writing about the big battle and will look for something else. De Wit is a natural. I hope he doesn’t want to make that Neale predicts his own firing tetter is a straight-ahead fighter who likes to work inside. Rudd said he expects more than two million people in the United States and Canada to watch the card on closed circuit television. He said the rights to the card have been sold in 56 countries around the world De Wit is scheduled to headline a card in Dallas on yet gold medallist Henry Till- man, who beat de Wit in the heavyweight final in Los Angeles last summer, is also scheduled to fight on the Dallas card. decision for us. Is he saying he doesn’t want to be back? “There's still a lot of hockey to be played. There's a lot of time yet. There won't be any decisions made until the season is over.” Neale has a four-year con. tract as general manager, which still has more than two years to run at somewhere near $150,000 a year “In order to turn the early season disaster into some. thing good they wanted me to coach (after Bill LaForge was fired) and %e have done a pretty good job of turning things around. I don't mind coaching, but where does that take you? “Aga manager I haven't been ible to approach next year.
