Castlegor News 1986 Review, March 30, 1986 Two things we're proud to believe in: COMMITMENT AND COMMUNITY For nearly a century now, we've been dedicated to helping build, develop and make British Columbia communities better places in which to live. It’s part of our overall commitment to continue to adopt and apply new technologies which will improve service to our customers. B.C. Tel’s continuing investment in digital electronic switching equipment is an example of providing for immediate improvements in service quality while, at the same time, building a groundwork for the more sophisticated developments of the electronic revolution. Just as B.C. experiences growth through the development of new communities, and the expansion of existing areas, B.C. Tel is moving forward with the times. And along the way, our commitment to improving B.C. community life remains a vital part of our total commitment:.’ BCTEL &) Making Castlegar an even better place to live. ig cable in ‘eparation B.C. Each family includes a base unit to serve a large Many man hours and a capital investment of over $1.5-million have gone into preparation and installation of the new digital equipment..Under the new system, call connections will be made by computerized circuitry — an advance over the present system's use of electro- mechanical connectors. “For subscribers, the new switch means better quality of service, and, eventually, access to a wider range of customer custom calling services, such as call forwarding and speed calling,” says district network manager Carl Frederiksen. “The computer capabilities of the GTD-5 will provide faster call jon as well as impr i through i of switching functions,” he says. “The GTD-5 has many advantages over the electro- mechanical equipment it replaces,” Frederiksen says. “It's also flexible enough to be adapted to existing central 1p area, remote switching and line units to serve smaller, outlying communities and multiplexers to serve sparsely populated areas. The base unit itself can start at a few hundred lines and expand easily to accommodate up to 100,000 lines. More than 4,500 customer lines in the Castlegar exchange will be converted to the new digital system next fall. Because the remote units use the computer power of the base unit, subscribers in more rural areas can have a modern telephone system with features previously limited to more populated areas. Through the base uni such cost-efficient procedures as centralized billing, maintenance and administration are possible. With the GTD-5 in service, customers will be aware of better service, quieter lines and faster connection times between served by el r hy This digital technology will permit a broader use of the telephone system, and allow B.C. Tel to continu to meet customer needs. EM UNLEADED. AWhole New Fueling from Mohawk ic Mohawk EM Unleaded is a premium performance fuel at a regular unleaded price. Don’t get into something over your head — Any time you're working outdoors, be aware of overhead power lines. We put them where you can't reach them — unless you might be working with nasty long things. Like ladders, or tree trimmers, or irrigation pipe, or pool skimmers, or sailboat masts, or anten- nas. They can seriously hurt or even kill you. Your children have other ways of reaching power lines — climbing trees, or flying kites, or going after tangled medal planes. Make sure they know the hazards. Sometimes, power lines come down to where you can reach them — in @ storm or after a vehicle crashes into a pole. in such cases, stay well away from fallen lines and call us or the police immediately.
