On that recent day,
Cleese’s price was flushed
cheeks. But it’s all in a day's
work when a stunt double is
not used. And as writer, co-
director (with Charles Crich-
ton) and star of the $7.3-mil.
lion film, the thin-lipped
comic is determined to get
Wanda right.

“My aim in a comedy is
terribly simple: I really want
to make people laugh,” said
Cleese, who won an Emmy
award this year for his per-
formance in the TV series
Cheers.

Is it just backslapping?

TORONTO — Before you can say Canadian content, the
Juno Awards are upon us again.

This year’s Juno Awards ceremony is set for Nov. 2 in
Toronto and will be broadcast at 7 p.m. EST on CBC-TV.

But didn’t we just have the Canadian Country Music
Awards on CTV? And the MTV Video Awards? And the
World Music Video Awards? And the CASBYs?

The proliferation of such shows prompts a couple of
questions: Is the public burned out on music award shows?
Are the Juno Awards just another bit of back-slapping
promotion to sell records?

The line from promoters is that the Junos “reward
excellence in Canadian music,” but the less enthusiastic
argue that the Junos only reward top sellers and don't
represent the artistic state of Canadian music.

SEEDS IN "60s

If there is a degree of cynicism about the exercise, it's
all a far cry from the early 60s when the seeds of the Junos
were planted.

Back then there was virtually no Canadian record
industry. Records by foreign artists ip sane the etn
And Canadian radio stations ignored Canadian
except for a few artists like the Guess Who.

In 1964, the music trade magazine RPM started an
annual readers poll, which eventually became the Gold Leaf
Awards. In 1971, the name was changed to the Juno Awards
after Pierre Juneau, then chairman of the Canadian Radio-

levision and Ts C rae:

Juneau had brought in content regulations that
stipulated 30 per cent of the music played by radio stations
must be Canadian. The Canadian recording industry was
born.

Now a raft of artists like Parachute Club, Kim Mitchell
and Gowan enjoy careers. And Canadians like
Bryan Adams, Anne Murray and Rush have become inter-
national stars, while Glass Tiger and Corey Hart have scored
in the United States.

FOR THE FANS

With the success Canadians now enjoy and the glitz
associated with the awards shows, some observers of the
music scene wonder whether Canada needs the Junos
anymore.

If anything, the Junos are entertaining. CBC's
production is first rate. And host Howie Mandel can be a real
scream.

AUDIENCE DOWN

Yet last year the Juno Awards show suffered a 700,000
drop in viewers from the record 2.3 million in 1985. That
year included a heavily publicized duet between Tina Turner
and Adams. And in 1986, CBC reduced the number of ads
promoting the show by more than half from the year before.

These problems were aggravated by the Junos’ two

stars, making the show tough to sell to viewers used to
seeing lots of superstars on U.S. awards shows.

- The average Canadian has never heard of many
nominees, especially those in the “most promising”
categories.

The academy and the CBC have taken a number of
measures to bolster the Junos this year.

CBC has scheduled more pre-show promotional spots
and it announced two weeks before the show that Murray
would present the best producer award.

The network also wanted to bring in some international
stars. But how to do it without damaging the credibility of
the Junos as a Canadian showcase?

The answer was a behind-the-scenes look at hot
Canadian producers. CBC had hoped for some in-person
appearances but settled for taped testimonials: U2'’s Bono
Vox will toast Hamilton's Daniel Lanois for his work on the
hit Joshua Tree album, Bon Jovi will honor Vancouver's
Bruce Fairbairn for his work on Slippery When Wet, and
Turner will honor Adams.

Unlike last year, this year's show offers competition for
awards between high-profile stars like Hart and Adams,
which should add some excitement.

PUBLIC VOTES

The academy is also banking on the newly created
entertainer of the year award, which is voted on by the
public. Molson breweries co-ordinated the distribution of
more than 3.5 million ballots.

“The award reinforces a star system in people's minds
because most people know the artists on the ballots,” sai
academy president Peter Steinmetz.

The 10 nominees are Adams, Hart, Murray, Tom
Cochrane and Red Rider, Bruce Cockburn, Gowan, Glass
Tiger, K.D. Lang, the Nylons, and Rock and Hyde.

Steinmetz said he hopes the Junos will stimulate the
Canadian music industry. The timing of the show is geared
to avoid conflict with the Grammys in February and boost
Christmas sales, he added.

“But we're not working for (the record industry). Our
spotlight is still on excellence of achievement in Canadian
recorded music.”
