Under the direction of John Charters, Castlegar Heritage Advisory Committee chairman; teachers Lesley Anderton, professor of geology at Selkirk College; Bill Sloan, professor of history at the college; Doris Sweeney, West Kootenai Area Guide Camp Advisor; and Bunny Charters, committee archivist, led a group of trainees and interested committee directors, including Bev Kennedy, manager of the Castlegar Chamber .of Commerce, students Leslie Price, Jon Varabioff, Tracy Mann, and Michelle Bouvette, together with directors George Apel and Verna Keraiff, on a 2'/2-hour survey tour of the island. Anderton spoke on the geology and geomorphism of the area and the formation of the island; Sloan outlined the Indian occupation, of the valley, the early explorers, starting with David Thompson, the fur trade, early mining and the age of the period of the paddlewheel steamers. Doris Sweeney, the local authority on the flora of the island, conducted an intensive class in tree and flower identification. The chapel house will be opening on a daily basis at 8 a.m. and remaining open for most of the day, and for the period up to the end of August, thanks to the efforts of the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce. Last Wednesday, the Friends of the Island support group met at the chapel house with heritage committee director George Apel in the chair and friends Bill Johnson, Verna Keraiff, Laima Allis, Harry Killough, Michelle Bouvette, Joe Killough and John Charters present. Charters reported on the progress of work on the island, including changes in the island signery and opening hours for the chapel house. Plans were made for emergency supervision of the chapel house in the event of absence of one of the regular guides, and for part-time supervision up to Thanksgiving. Discussions were heard on fire safety and the chapel house gardens. Anyone wishing to help or donate material is asked to contact Verna (Mrs. W.) Keraiff, director of gardens for the heritage advisory committee. Doris Sweeney, a 21-year-old veteran in the Girld Guide movement and who has just been awarded the Medal of Merit, one of the highest honors in guiding, for exceptional service in Girl Guides in Canada, is preparing a floral photograph display of the plants on the island. The display will be mounted in the chapel house for the use of the guides, for visitors and for local student groups. She has already put an island historical serapbook on display at the chapel house. gar News Supplement to the Castlegar News stle Ca Thursday, June 30 through to Wednesday, July 6 of Wednesday, June 29, 1988 sal i Hi i uy ‘ul rae 4 I ‘a eda e obs Aas ite 4 4 cn Hie Ctitelel Hae pag tt pat tqit if: iui Hite AA ct tolele _— th an hil iat : ll ui silalth dla i it tah AOE Ane Na ait if i During June, When You Buy or Lease a New or Used* Car or Truck From Maloney Pontiac, You Automatically Earn a Chance in *Used Vehicles Must Hove A Sale Price in Excess of $1500.
