The protesters are worried logging on the site may harm a community watershed, but SFP said it has addressed the group's concerns and has a legal right to begin bullding a logging road. Protesters thwart road work Slocan Forest Products’ request for injunction delayed to Aug. 29 By MILLS Staff Writer A showdown between environ- mentalists and Slocan Forest Prod- ucts at Hasty Creek in the Slocan Valley will have to wait for another jay. Protesters set up a blockade of the disputed area Monday, and were preparing to be arrested today, but they were given a reprieve by a Van- couver judge. SFP went to B.C. Court I can say is that we're hopeful.” The disputed area represents about 118 hectares in the Red Moun- tain Road area near Silverton, about 160 kilometres northeast of Castle- gar. ¢¢ * The area in question is relatively small and would be selectively logged over a several years, Dods said. He said SFP had been talking with the environmentalists in the area for seven years and thought the had “ad te eae a Tuesday seeking an injunction to have the protesters removed, but the judge adjourned the motion until Aug. 29, so that both parties in the dispute could be heard. A Slocan Forest Products crew set to begin work on a logging road at the site Monday was turned back by about 280 protesters blocking the road. “I don’t know if it’s a setback, it’s simply a deferment,” said SFP spokesman Terry Dods. But the adjournment offered renewed hope to the Slocan Valley Watershed Alliance, which repre- sents watershed groups throughout the valley. “The judge saw fit to see our side, and obviously we’re very pleased about that,” said protest organizer Sally Hammond. “I'm assuming the judge will give us a fair hearing. All y ly the concerns relative to this particu- lar area.” “We don’t enjoy it (confrontation with environmentalists), nor relish it, nor wish it was going ahead. Nev- ertheless, we have a legal right to proceed with road construction and we're simply attempting to (do that),” Dods said today. The chairman of the Hasty Creek Watershed Committee said about 20 houses, a food products factory and a small, independent hydroelectric producer, which all depend on water from Hasty Creek, will be threat- ened if logging proceeds without a complete watershed management plan. “We're not opposed to logging in the watershed per se, but we do require adequate protection for the OR water resource,” said Jim Rutkow- sky. je the blocked entrance to the disputed ai Slocan Forest Products spokesman Terry Dods meets Hasty (from left) Richard Allin and Jim A 3767383, 3779399, 4350387, 4610903, 4797220, 4996007. Syringa celebrates 23rd birthday By BARBARA TANDORY Special to The News Syringa Creek Provincial Park celebrated its 23rd birthday last weekend with a special program of events. Aside from the usual stream of campers and beach-goers, about 300 people atttended the birthday bash Friday evening, capped with a slide show titled The Syringa Story presented in the amphitheatre by park interpreter Elaine Kruse. “There have been a lot of people who told me that this is the nicest place they've been to in B.C.,” said Kruse. who has been running the park’s summer interpretation centre since Syringa Park came under private management three years ago, operating under a contract with the B.C. parks and recreation branch. Since then, Kruse has been combining her day job at SN. McLean Forestry Services Ltd. — a forestry consultant firm for Atco Lumber — with that of a park naturalist at Syringa. “It’s really taken a change,” she said, noting that the present park management is putting concentrated efforts into bringing in visitors and tourists. “We have everything here, clean and cool air and many different tree species,” she said. “Because of the trees it’s screened and is near the beach, and it’s located right close to Castlegar.” Syringa Creek park occupies 385 acres of land, approximately one kilometre by 1.6 kilometres in size, returned to the provincial parks branch as part of the settlement for B.C. Hydro’s building of the Keenleyside dam that resulted in flooding of farmland and ancient Indian sites. The park was established in 1968 on the east end of Lower Arrow Lake six kilometres north of Castlegar and is the most developed of a ain of parks up and down the lake created { ih the dam was built. The lake levels rose by 13 metres when the dam went in and water temperataure increased by 20 degrees Celsius, adversely affecting fish species. The Syringa summer program closed Saturday night with a rock display and slide Pp ion by local logist Lesley Anderton
