212 Saturday, February 29, 1992 @ Reading is no. 1 at Blueberry Creek Blueberry Creek School re- opened in September of last ar. a Tt has a Primary One class and a Primary Two and Three class. While the three 'R's are the centre of the Blueberry Creek's curriculum, it’s the first R, reading, which we ~ would like to tell you about to- day. Same children know a bit about reading before they come to school. They have been read to from baby books and have heard the nursery rhymes. Parents can continue to support children's learning by reading with them and to them and by listening to the kids as they read. There's am- ple evidence that learning to read is important. How do we teach reading at Blueberry Creek? In the past, letter sounds and new words were studied before stories were tackled. Now the reverse is the prac-. tise. Now teachers develop an interest in the children for the whole story before they learn the small parts like letter sounds and vocabulary. Kids learn that print is talk written down. Something else that is dif- ferent today is what the chil- dren are reading at school. It used to be almost exclusively SD Blueberry Creek School School CROSSINGS readers containing material with little relevance to chil- dren's lives. Now it is a variety of read- ing material. Children now read good literature from the school library, the children’s own writing and excellent Canadian reading series’ which contain lots of stories addressing kids’ interests. Teachers help to make the connections between these projects and the story. Daily silent reading times, sto! ling opportunities, vis- ae school library, indi- vidual reading projects or chanting poems from a chart all support the reading that is done each day during the read- ing lesson. The results are children who enjoy books and quickly develop the skills to become in- dependent readers. = INDMAR ESTATES LINDMA Merry Creek Road, Castlegar Quality Adult Condominiums Within Walking Distance of: - Shopping - Banking - Churches ¢ Restaurants - Fitness Centre ¢ Medical Clinic LINDMAR ESTATES Affordable Housing Complete with: ¢ Garages - Patios - Yards - Choose from a wide range of options.
