INVITATION An open house in honour of Hazel Kirkwood as she retires Tuesday, June 23 « 2-4 p.m. at Valley Vista Primary School TASK gets provincial cash Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER The provincial government has poured another $100,000 into Kootenay tourism. Tourism Minister Darlene Marzari announced Tuesday that the Tourism Action Soci- ety in the Kootenays would re- ceive additional funding. And TASK Tour Develop- ment Co-ordinator Maureen Gardner says that’s just fine. “Well, it’s a substantial cut- back from the $180,000 we re- ceived in February of 1991,” she said. : “But we understood cut- backs were coming. We're thankful to have what we do.” Gardner said that money received was vital in order to implement independent pro- the Columbia River’s past pre- sent and future. “It would be something like a science world, but the best thing is it would act as a gate- way to the region.” According to Gardner, the centre would be located “in the vicinity of Castlegar” and could bring an economic boom of sorts. “It potentially could be a $10. million project and it wouldn’t all becoming from the government, that’s for darn sure.” Gardner added that the centre would be “a long-term project that will help Castle- gar and the Kootenays im- prove and enhance _ the tourism package” already in place. Gardner said there is no jects such as the proposed Co- lumbia Interpretive Centre, a. project which would examine timetable or site set for the Co- lumbia Interpretive Centre.
