THURSDAYS APRIL_.17, 1952 CASTLE NEWS, C : British C PAGE 5 SPORT TRAILS (By...Len, Walker) Today marks my. first. anni- versary -writing this, column in, ‘the Castle News. Sport has gone ahead in leaps and bounds in the past year with kids ball, senior men, and the ‘West Kootenay Champions, the Castlegar: Kats, the inter-school track meet held last summer — all‘ a hugh -suc- cess. Basketball was the main Sport this past winter as well as. a bo: club which had some- thing Jike 50 members, All in all it has been’ a. good year, even if some of my predictions were a little off the beam. With the announcement last week that. three imports have arrived to play softball and bas- -ketball, it looks like. the com- ing yeariwill be even more suc- cessful than the last. Castlegar. has tried for years . to have a championship senior men’s ball club, and from what I have heard no one has tried harder to reach that goal than our own Gerry Wanless, who has put in long hours with various teams. Gerry has never given up trying and I for oné would like to see Castlegar go all out this seaspn_to. fulfill” Gerry's dream ofa championship. From this day forward Castle gar, I believe, should let every- one know. that-we-are.in-the sport picture and that we will take a back seat to. no one. LACROSSE Sunday afternoon I took in the lacrosse game between Trail . Ba and Castlegar. This was ‘the first game that I have. ever. witness- ed and*:I. can, well: understand after -seeing it. that the Indians’ were the originators of. this sport for it looked like someone would be scalped by an opposing play- er at any time. Castlegar took an early lead and never were headed, winning handily 11 to 6. Ewan Wallace- led the local attackers with 6 goals. Walt Poogy picked up 3. Bob Moffat led the Trail team with 3 goals. Fred Horkoff played spectacul- arly in the Castlegar goal, beat- ing the Trail players time—after time. Paul Zanet playing rover for the locals, played a good game but failed to score when he hurridly shot three -or four times missing the goal by inch- es. Rudy .Martini and Butch Hulburt on two different occa- sions in the final period, dropped their sticks and went at it with fists, but no damage was done as players from both sides pulled them apart. HOCKEY The Detroit Red Wings who took Toronto out of the playoffs ‘in four straight games scoring 13 goals to Toronto's 3 have tak- en a strangle hold on the finals by downing Montreal Canadiens 3 straight games. by scores of 3 to 1; 2 to 1, and 3 to 0. De- troft should take the cup in . A straight- games if-they. do, it will be the first time that a team has gone through the-play- offs undefeated that is 8 straight games. B.
