Auto repair people every-
where will thank you if
you print this letter.

Our customers come in
the door expecting to be
ripped off. We must work
extra hard to earn their
trust. The main problem is
getting them to understand
the charge for diagnostics.
It is essential that we iden-
tify the problem before we
can repair it. Only today, a
man hung up on me when I
told him the cost of the
diagnostic would be
$42.95. He thought it
should be free.

To make this understand-
able, compare the diagnos-
tic charge to the fee
doctors charge to check
you over and give an edu-
cated opinion on the state
of your health. Today, all
automobiles are computer
controlled and repair peo-
ple are technicians, which
requires a higher level of
training and skill than the
“grease monkey” of days
gone by. Also, many of our
customers don’t realize the
complexity of the comput-
erized machinery under the
hood. They often tinker
with it before bringing the
automobile in, which
almost always guarantees
trouble.

Garages, like physicians,
must meet ordinary busi-
ness expenses. If we
offered free diagnostics,
we would go under.

It is true that there are
some dishonest repair peo-
ple, just as there are some
physicians who recom-
mend unnecessary surgery,
but the vast majority of
both are trustworthy. —

the vast majority of repair
people are honest. If, how-
ever, the estimate for
repair seems unreasonable,
a person can always take
the car to another garage
for an estimate. It would
be worth it and cost no
more in the long run.
