ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, NOVEMBER 18, 1808. Mica Mining. “The mining of mica is the poctry of mining,” says Godey’s. “It is impossi- ble to conceive ofa more exciting and fascinating employment. The vein of mica-bearing quartz, lying between rocka of diferent formation, has been found, The cap rock has been blasted away. Little ‘nigger-heads’ — small lumps of crumbling mica mixed with slate and ether rock—are growing plen- tiful. The rock is carefully examined by the experienced miner, and all indi- cations are that mica will soon be found. A blast is made. The rock and debrie are cleared away, and therein the bot- tom iea block of the precious stuff, a ragged corner showing itself black and glittering in the-white quartz in which itis imbedded. With the tipsof the fingers the miner gently and affection- ately brushea away the dirtand small stones which partly cover it. Its thick- ness is carefully noted, its position in the rock is learnedly discussed, and many a speculation indulged in as to its size and quality. The holeis quickly drilled, the small blast is made, just ti loesening the rock, and all eagerly crowd around, as one of the men with his pick pulls away the broken stone. There it lies, a black, glittering mass, Mor 10 inches thick and irregular in shape, as all blocks of mica are. A good sized block, and if solid end of a perfect cleay- age, will be worth many dollara. The excitement is not allayed, however, and * will not be until the block is split open and we know how it looks onthe in- side.. It is a very bad thing -to split open a block at the mine, and contrary to all rules, for there is danger that the fine, polished faces will be scratched and asheet—thin, indeed, but valuable— will have to be taken offgnd thrown away.” Today’s “Quotations. Moth is built something on the Fi style of tall and angular with massive arms and long step Jadders. Umfried is compact- ly built and sustained his reputation for pluck and strategy, but he was clearly outclassed. Still the contest was stubbornly fought, arid the reault wag at times uncertain. . Max Carter was chosen referee and his dicisions were fair and indicated excel- lent knowledge of the rules that govern wrestling. He was alert and it kept him jumping sideways at times to keep tabs on the two seething masses of humanity onthe mat. Pat White was a swift time keeper, notwithstanding that he used a stop watch. The first bout was catch-as-catch can, Moth secured a fall in 14 minutes and 50 seconds. - Umfried instantly bridged but the referee gave Moth the decision which was considered fair. In thie bout both men made a. pretty .exhibi- ion, ‘fhe second was under tlie Grece-Ro- man rules, and in that Umfried was no match for his alert opponent. He kept away continuously, and the whole plan of battle was-on the defensive. The bout was a long drawn one, at the last Moth, after both men had been on the mat for perhaps a minute, got Umfried down on a flying roll. Time,19 minutes and ten seconds, The thirdbout, which was “under the catch-as catch-can rules, was a swift one. After some lively work, Umfried by the aid of a strangle, got Moth down on the mat, and a moment later, with a hody hold and a halch, _ he forced both of Moth’s shoulders squarly to the floor and held them there. Time, three minutes, Inthe 4th Greco-Roman, Moth used the strangle hold to a decision. Um- fried was carried from the mat uncon- scious but quickly revived. He had lost the contest but Moth to J. F. The fire hall is a two story frame structure, convenient and comfortable. The ground floor is used for the hor-es and fire apparatus. Up stairs are five bed rooms, a setting room and the alarm battery. Upon the whole, Ross- land has a fire department of which she may well be proud, BATEMAN IS COMING. The main tunnel, known as tunnel No, 2, is now in about 410 feet, which gives a vertical depth of 160 feet. This tunnel has been run its full length right along the vein. There were two breaks in the vein in the shape of dykes, but the work was continued through them and the vein followed. About 300 feet from the nouth of tunnel No. 2 a winze is being sunk, which is now down about 50 feet, which is algo running in good ore, The average width of the ore body in this winze is three feet. There ia another winze in tunnel No. 2 about 100 feet in from the main en- trance, the face of which is in solid ore. Work has been stopped on this for the present. The new tunnel which was re- cently begun on the eastern end of the property, is now in some 40 feet, and good showings are being encountered. When this tunnel is extended to the ex- treme west end of the claim as it is in- tended to do, a vertical depth of some- thing over 700 feet will be obtained. It is the further intention of the manage- ment te connect the winze now being wofked from a point 300 feet in from the mouth of the No. 2 tunnel, with the new tunnel in the east end, which is 200 feet lower down than tunnel No 2. This when will give di air ventelation to the whole workings of the property. Excellent ors is being taken both from the winze and tunnel No. 2. There are 26 men working at present G.C.
