7/4 :J >n IJ':?"3 EPP- ALICE cl (Jc:( Last weekend we were in Nelson at the Legion's Fall Convention. It was a pretty hectic weekend with meetin_p. Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. 'Ibis time around the meetings seemed to accomplish more than at any one of them I have attended. The sports committee lost a chairman as Harry Bate of Castlegar resigned from that post but it bas been ably .filled by Doug Mcisaac of Trail. This is the committee that I have been most interested in. The two main sports in which Legion members indulge are golf and curling. Darts is the main standby indoors. In these three sports the Legion member can vie for a spot on a team that could go all the way to the Dominion finals. Several rinks from this are have done just that George Beaudry and Gil LeMoel come to mind most readily. Provision bas been made for teams from the West Kootenay to enter nationwide playoffs in darts as well. This year for the first time within my ken, teams from here will be able to travel to Squamish for the provincial playoffs and if successful can go on to Letbbridge for the nationals. This year, Castlegar is beading the list to play host to the zone playoffs. This is all happening as we in the Legion bear dire predictions regarding the future of our organization, such as, "The old boys are dying off. Who is going to replace them?" Well, we are getting the replacements. All we need to do is to see that these young people are beaded in the right direction. Evidence of this bas been forthcoming in the last two youth leadership reports we have bad at conventions in - Nakusp and now in Nelson. A young lady from Nakusp addressed us at the Nakusp meeting and on Sunday a young fellow by the name of Chris Naaf, also from Nakusp, gave us a very interesting talk regarding bis week spent in the Terry Fox Institute in Ottawa. Nakusp is a small town, the Legion branch there bas sent quite a number of their boys and girls on this program. Maybe some of the other branches should follow their lead. That's one way to ensure some able members coming on stream in the Legion. In hockey, the Warriors are now 0-2 on the start of the young season and from what we have seen so far we'll be seeing a lot of good hockey games before the season is over. U the game versus Grand Forks was typical of what's to come, we in Rossland. can be assured that we have a team that has a lot of heart along with considerable ability. There are still some loose ends to be taken.c~re of, but on the whole the brand of hockey is good. ' I'm not sure about this, but it seems to me that we are getting more people in the stands this season which is definitely one facet of the situation which should add a lot to the Warriors' fortunes. Well, the upper course has been officially closed but for anyone wishing to extend the golf season - we are having some rather nice weather now - can still play the course. The Rossland Retirees' Curling Club members are down there taking in the reduced green fees on a fifty-fifty basis with the golf club, so if you feel like taking a stroll around our, grand old layout, our members will be pleased to assist you in any way possible. Curling clubs are gearing up to get out on the ice. Only one has passed along word of organizational meetings so far. This is the mixed club in Rossland which will meet in the curling lounge at 7 p.m. Oct. 19. This club proved to be very popular last season as new people took up the duiUemze o formin popular all the time. Heaven knows there's enough dire happenings in this old world l today without dragging them , into the game we play. This club proved to be very popular last season as new people took up the challenge of forming a mixed club, something which has not been a fixture in Rossland for some time. So,neone may dispute that statement but this club is built along a little different lines. The main effort is to put some fun into your games, something which seems to be getting more :&.----u:a---.-a~lii f t ~ f t ljlnilllT" o - - -
