Charters The Worshipful Company of Selkirk Vint- ners has just completed another cycle of the year. Early in this year they gathered at the two Selkirk courtyards to prune the grape vines and clean up the ravages of winter. They were back again in early and late summer to prune back and tie up the vines, viniculturist George Dubokovic with a view to experimenting with and developing a grape growing industry in the West Kootenay an ear- lier dream of the late Peter Verigin. clear the weeds, apply susslphur spray against mold and cover the ripening grapes with nets to foil the birds. Twice in the past two weeks they have gath- ered, armed with clippers and boxes to harvest, the result of their labors — some 60 boxes (about half a ton) of red and white wine grapes — “S good crop”, as their indefatigable presi- dent, and professor at Selkirk College, Dr. Pe- ter Wood, declared with a satisfied smile. Finally, this Saturday morning, they met at the home of Master Vintner, Ben Thor-Larsen, and with the speed of long practice had crushed the grapes, stored the must (juice and skin mix- ture to be fermented) and cleaned all of the equipment and boxes in a little more than two hours. It was as always a combination business and social occasion and concluded when 16 people sat down to a richly laid table set by Ingeborg Thor-Larsen, and a pot-luck luncheon washed down with last year’s vintage. Later they will gather again for a business and social meeting and to share the 1991 wine that Thor-Larsen has so skillfully brought to maturity in his cellars. The Worshipful company was established about 25 years ago by then Selkirk teacher and It continues as a educational group and so- cial club for wine-makers. New members are welcome and anyone wishing to join the Vint- ners is invited to call Dr. Peter Wood or Dr. John Mansbridge at Selkirk College. The Worshipful Company of Selkirk Vintners completed another cycle of the year by Selkirk College. Whooping cough arrives Corinne Jackson NEWS REPORTER Watch where you’re cough- ing. More than 20 cases of whooping cough have been re- ported within the Central Kootenay Health Unit area in the last two months. “The incidence is higher for children under five years of age,” Pat Gibson said. “But adults have definitely been known to get it.” In fact, the 20 infected indi- viduals range in age from sev- en-weeks to 40-years. The public health nurse said that the disease is vaccine-pre- ventable. However, she said, “if you are not protected through immunization the de- gree of the illness and the pos- sibility of complications are greater.” Whooping cough is highly contagious and passed on by coughing or sneezing. She said that treating the disease with antibiotics early can help pre- vent its spread. Some signs to look for are persistent cough- ing that lasts for more than two weeks, or a cough that re- sults in vomiting or a “whoop.” Parents whose child’s im- munization may not be up-to- date are asked to contact the health unit.
