drainage near Yahk in the
Kootenay Lake Forest Dis-
trict are alive with the
sounds of work.

A tree spacing project is
being carried out there
thanks to the federal/pro-
vincial funding of the Em-
ployment Bridging Assis-
tance Program (EBAP).

The project is being spon-

sored by Celcrest Timber
Ltd, J.H. Huscroft Ltd.
Wynndel Box and Lumber
Company Ltd., and Crest-
brook Forest Industries Ltd.
The -same forest companies
are sponsoring spacing ac-
tivities in Néxt Creek, Hazel
Creek and Dodge Creek
drainages near Creston.

At the Freeman site, work-
ers are thinning a dense
mixed stand of lodgepole pine
and western larch. This is a
forest that established itself
in the aftermath of a 1925
wildfire and supports too
many trees per hectare.

Spacing is not without its
hazards, namely the threat of
fire from the pile of slash
created by the thinning op-
eration.
