LONDON (AP) — Despite a booming movie i

down at the rate of one a week because of poor attendance.

“There is a great malignancy in the belly of theatres ig

Picture Association of America, said during a recent visit to

“It's a dying business.”

The Department of Trade says Britons, who were the
world’s most moviegoers in the early 1920s are now going to
the cinema only about once a year — and the box office
figures are dropping every week.

“These are undoubtedly hard times for cinema
proprietors,” Undersecretary for Industry Norman Lamont
told Parliament last month. He cited figures showing cinema
attendance dropped over the last 30 years to 64.4 million a
year in 1983, from 1.25 billion a year.

In the meantime, the movie industry is in high gear with
50 films in the production or post-production stages,
including David Lean’s Passage to India.

“It is a strange dichotomy that British film production is
booming out the cinemas themselves are in trouble,” says
Mundy Ellis of the British Film Institute.

Valenti blamed the decline in ticket sales on the shabby
state of Britain's theatres with their “evil odors and sticky
floors.”
