Ski Tips by Terry Miller ‘There's a lot to be said for jumping into things with both fect, and we have certainly jumped into this new ski season with both fect as the skiing last weekend was nothing less than biblical. With well over a meter of snow in the alpine snowpack, those parts of Granite Mountain formally open were alive with the grunts of |: powder pigs, rutting around in 15 centimeters of fresh, first-class Red Mountain powder. What a treat, Everywhere I skiied, I was amazed at the coverage and consistency of the snow for this time of year. A ski pole pushed down to the ground revealed a firm consistency to the old snow while the top twenty centimeters was that glorious stuff I call ego snow—forgiving , easy-to-ski fluff that can make an expert powder day of the year had clouded my perception, but with the blue Star day to myself all the way. Not bad for December 8. But my early season legs were being tested while the ansteghit of other full-grin skiers soon also took their toll on the snow. Soon I was catching myself making little mistakes and big recoveries, and skiing that had been mi all ing had to be re-tooled for classic cold-crud skiing conditions—which meant simply that I had to be substantially more disciplined with what had been working for me all morning. I remembered a racing clinic I had taken years ago with Grant Smith. We were skiing gates on the T-Bar and my skiis were bounc- ing on every turn. “Feel your new edge,” Grant told me. “Transfer your weight smoothly to your new ski early in the turn and feel your new edge take the snow.” Magic. And what works well on hard rutted race courses works doubly well for free-skiing. It may seem a little vague on paper, but next time out, simply transfer your weight to your (downhill) turning ski early in the turn, and say those magic words — “Feel your new edge.” Feel is the operative word here, as opposed to jumping onto your new edge, which is exactly the kind of ski physics that make your skiis act unpredictably in uneven, cruddy snow. By feeling with your new ski, the ski as a carving tool, is able to maintain a oe single track through the snow. This involves a solidly on your downhill ski, but when the going gets cuddly this isa great way to maintain a fluid, controlled style in tough snow. powder skier out of anyone. (Castlegar Sun, Decem- ber 4, 1991). it is easy of course to see the immediate effect on those businesses that pay their employ- ees no more than the minimum wage. We must remember, though, that this increase is part of the cost of doing business and is handled in the same manner as is the cost of borrowing money, or getting the roof repaired, or paying for adver- tising, or the increase in the cost of electrical service that will soon be upon us. : We must look for the positive effects in our c1 . We are in general agreement ‘that an increase in the purchasing power of our people will have a beneficial effect on business. What better way is there to achieve this than by putting money in the hands of those who are working at mini- mum wage? These people, by and large, are not among those who are going to Florida or Arizona for the winter, or even to Spokane or Colville for a short shopping trip. No, their very circumstances dic- tate that they will spend their money - and all of it - close to where they make it. Think about it.
