Page 68 The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, July 20, 1994 ON THE MO ba Improving safety at railway crossings Do you know of a rail- way crossing in your com- munity that could be a safety problem? While Transport Canada, the rail- ways and road authorities all work together to ensure 80 per cent of the total cost of highway/rail crossing improvements. Three steps are involved for a crossing to be considered for finan- cial assistance under this First, the public crossing must be in existence for at least three years; second, a Tequest must be made to the local or provincial road authority identifying the area recommended for improvement and third, if approved, a request will be forwarded to Transport Canada for consideration, While safety can often be enhanced with improve- ments to a crossing, it sometimes makes more sense to close a crossing. Railway crossing safety is everyone’s business! Make it your business to highlight any changes that might improve safety at a * particular crossing. Elimi- nating risk can also greatly improve safety. So be sure to recommend the closing of crossings that really are not needed. Knowing what you can do to improve safety in your community is key to having fewer crossing accidents to report. For more information about Transport Canada’s programm to improve rail- way safety, please contact your regional Transport Canada public affairs or surface office. They’re kept alive every summer during the annual Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition and Fishermen’s Reunion. The Fisheries “Ex” offers visitors a close-up view of these old time skills and other aspects of Nova Scotia’s fishing industry. Boats, gear and equipment are all on dis- play. Visitors can learn of the skills and traditions The dory boat races take place in Lunenburg har- bour and involve rowers from Nova Scotia and from the province’s tradi- tional fishing rivals from Gloucester, Massachusetts. This year’s Fisheries Exhibition, August 25-28, has been chosen as Cana- da’s Top Event by the American Bus Associa- tion, adding to its lustre as a popular tourist attraction. Besides the demonstra- tion of traditional skills, there are contests to deter- mine the fastest dory boat rowers and the quickest scallop shucker. | Want to get famous? 1955 Ford Thunderbird We want photos of your street rod, custom or classic vehicle — row a heavy, wooden, flat- bottom row boat along the one-mile course. There’s no fibreglass hulls or secret keels for this race; it’s all hard work. And the thousands of spectators who line the Lunenburg waterfront appreciate the effort and cheer with every stroke of the oars. The dory races between 31 and Lunenburg have been going on for 43 years, part of the colourful Fisheries Exhibition that has been held in Lunen- burg since 1916 when local residents organized a homecoming celebration for Grand Banks schooners returning from a summer of fishing off Newfoundland. Today, the Fisheries Exhibition pays tribute to the fishing heritage of Lunenburg and to all the communities in the north- east that depend on the sea for their livelihood. This year’s exhibition will also feature the popu- lar scallop-shucking com- petition involving teams from Luneneburg and New Bedford, M husetts N oe el ANS roo {71 y — oy including the Old Towne Heritage District and the Nova Scotia Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, right on the waterfront. There’s plenty of ac dation in town, who use their skills and dexterity with a scallop- knife to race the clock, removing the tender, white scallop meat from the shells at a lightening-fast pace. There’s also a Queen of the Sea pageant, nightly entertainment, carnival rides, grand parade and fishermen’s picnic. The Nova Scotia Fish- eries Exhibition and Fish- ermen’s reunion is part of this year’s “Village Fair” program, promoting Nova Scotia’s small town hospi- tality and'community spirit and is part of the 66 days of summer in Nova Scotia.
