For 1897 it is believed the world’s gold pro- duct will reach at least $240,000,000, an increase of $35,000,000 over 1896. Mr. Preston says: “Asan indication of the increase in the world’s gold product for 1887, the following table, showing the product of the. United States, Australia. Wise people are keeping quiet and eawing wood, but scientists and learned men, ever ready to dazzel the ignorant with their learning, are advancing all kinds of ridiculous opinions about the origin of the sky wonder. Some of these learned scientists assert that it is nothing more than some freak of the air formed by a clongomeration of gasses, and brought about by atmospheric changes. Others declare it must be & fragment of a comet'that has got lost and is looking around for the parent stem. Others there are who bend Jearnedly over maps and charts, and after scanning the blue marts of the sky, solemnly shake their head and say it is something that will have t » be un- raveled in the womb of tima, There are others who never believe anytbing un- less they sec it themselves, and declare the whole thing a fake. * However, ordinary people, who have not the advent ofa scientific educa- tion, dare to believe that the sky roainer is some air ship the invention of which has been kept profound secret. A DAZZLING SIGHT, The Police’s New Uniforms Caused the Small Boy to Gaze in Wonder. The sun got up early this morning to feast its eyee upon the new police uni- forms which outshone the emerald hued gems of famed India. The dazzling spectacle of big brass buttons blazing like globular balls of fire against dark blue uniforms that enwrapped fine manly forms, caused the unprepared to stand aghast, made the small boy specie to stare in open mouthed wonder and made the ladies wish that they had con- sulted the spring milliner before issuing Of course, the patrolmen came in for considerable “‘joshing” at the hands of their immediate friends, but having worn uniforms before they carried them- selves well and gave the teasers no chance to say that they looked ridicu- lous. New Quarters in the Imperial Block— School Attendance. An increased attendance to that of yesterday, marked the second day’s opening of school this morning at the various class rooms. The children ap- portioned to the two rooms in the Im- perial block, were «liemissed again as the roome will not be fitted up until to- morrow. Professor Blair -and his as- sistants have been kept unusually busy, and will have their hands full for sev- eral days tocome, before matters can be got to running with clock-work pre- cision. While many new faces have appeared there are just as many old ones, who have not yet put in an appearance. These will probably attend later. Un- less the parents can offer a reasonable excuee, all children of school age will be forced to attend and the parents held to the strict letter of the law. The officials do not intend to harsh, but on the other hand they intend to see that every Id has a show iogain acommon school education. NASHVILLE STUDENTS.
