CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, June 16, 1978 By DAN OBEDKOFF Last Saturday saw the Castlegar Aquanauts hold another very successful Swim- athon at the Bob Brandson Pool. The Swimathon started at 7 am. with 22 swimmers waiting at the door. Before the day was over, 78 swimmers participated, with most of them swimming the entire mile (71 laps). Three swimmers, qualified for the gold bar, which is given who complete the the Legion team, although it was obvious that this team had previous experience with swim ming relays, Perhaps next year the RCMP will search for Legion cards. A big thank you goes out to all who participated in the noon race, and this includes Mayor Audrey Moore, who so expertly fired the starting gun, and the Sunflower Fest Queen con- tentants, who bravely faced the weather to applaud the win- ners, Swimathon chai; mile in less than 25 minutes. Mike Berger had the fastest time of the day as he completed _ the mile in 23 minutes, 33 seconds. Jeff Stewart swam the 71 laps in 24 minutes, 31 seconds, and Jason Leitch finished with a time of 24 minutes, 41 seconds. These times are outstand- ing, when you consider the fact that both Jason and Mike will be swimming in the 11- and 12-age group this year. = Samantha Jardine, at ‘six years old, was the youngest swimmer to complete the mile swim. A few of the many tremendous swims were turned in by Sharon Cooper (fastest girls' time), Debbie Innes, Chris Wanjoff (who just missed his gold) and Dave Zurik, Pauline Orr, Helaine Oleski and Kerry Uchida, who all improved their times immensely over last year. The Royal Canadian Le- gion captured the Dunkers trophy with a time of 51 seconds. The RCMP followed closely with a time of 56 seconds and next were the Aquanauts with a time of one minute, three seconds. Kiwan- is, Rotary, and the Lions Club finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Congratulations go out to STRONG CONTENDER as top mo: Farkas who will have ralsed approximately $75 through her spons all pled; ‘e@ honored. Swimathon ris shown here with ges ar man Richard Wolff, Rich- ard Wolff appreciated the extra effort on the part of the senior swimmers and the many parents who helped count laps and time the swimmers, "A special bouquet to those who helped all day at the charge desk” he said. Thanks also go out to the City of Castlegar who allowed the club to use the pool for the day and to all the sponsors who so generously pledged well over $2 thousand for the day. After the Swimathon, a barbeque was held at Syringa Creek, and although the weather did not cooperate too much, a good timé was had by all. who went. Spirits were lifted by. the smells of sizzling steaks on the barbeque pits prepared. by Mr. Gruden and Mr. Walsh, Swimmers of the week were Kendra McTaggart and Monica Tymofievich. Kendra is a first-year swimmer who has had very good times in the time trials, and Monica is another youngster who seems to im- prove with each practice. Other swimmers who are training very hard are Tom Carew, Ray Yule (who had a good swimathon time) and Kevin Jardine. - of the Swim RCMP and Service Clubs Support Swimathon DUNKERS TROPHY was won Saturday by this Royal Canadian Leglon team who were just seconds year's winners, the local RCMP.
