Not so. The early bird of some of the students catches “an early fly,” “the afternoon bird" or “as well as he fetches.” ‘A rolling stone “ean break a bone,” “will knock you down" or, “may hit soon.” : The grass is always green- er, “than the sky,” “in- the summer,” “when the: sun is out,” “when you know what you're doing,” or “than a wéiner.” : People who live in glass es “are people who get urt" or “are fools.” : One good turn “is a good time," “is a curve,” or “and that’s the end.” ‘ The fourth-graders also had some thoughts about horses, which everyone knows you can lead to water, but: : "You can't lead him to bed,” “not to the barn,” “you can't lead a horse to supper,” “a horse can't lead you,” or “not a cow.” : “A bird in hand is really grand,” contended one girl, tending, “you're still tired" or “is hard on school nights.” Other original sayings from the fourth-graders: “Waste not, waste good.” “Look before you talk.” “Silence is violence.” “A stitch in time is not out of line.” Mall By Pastor GORDON PALMER New Denver Pentecostal Chureh The separation of church and state is a fundamental aspect of North American cul- ture. The purpose for which this was instituted was to allow true and full freedom of religion and conscience to exist in public life. § That is, there was to be no state church demanding relig- ious homage, and stifling all other claims’ to truth, but a religion of the’ people, by the people, for the people, where their own personal beliefs could be freely expressed without fear or harm. One can accurate ly define it as a very democratic structure. : With the rise of the industrial age, and the need for corres- ponding education, the nine- teenth and twentieth centuries saw the implementation of vast governmental schemes of com- pulsary education. Within this . educational process a place for religious exercises and celebra- tions was reserved. The 20th century however, also brought a great surge of humanism, which has increas- ingly challenged any religious influence in the public school system, and demanded its elimination on the ground thatit is a violation of the separation of church and state, in that the government is indirectly pro- pagating religion, From a strictly legalistic perspective, we must indeed throw the religionists in public education out on their ear. The issue however, is far more complex than any legalistic viewpoint will-ever indicate. Consider the bearing the fol- lowing factors have on this , Issue: “@ All men and societies have a religious nature, and religious beliefs. e There are degrees of religiousness. © No educational system can avoid being religious, - ¢ The tremendous cost of education. e The influence of human- im, ¢ © The irreligious stance of humanism. Tragically their religion with its relativism of all author- ity, truth, and meaning, except for the existential realities of man must be seen at its core to be very irreligious indeed, For it assumes that all religion (except humanism) is irrelevant to human life, and that all other values, life concepts and purposes are Pulpit & Pew : by Ministers in the West Kootenay/ Boundary Area — To leave the world without, any truth meaning or value, isa very dangerous religion indeed, for being a spiritual boing man will always be searching for these very things. A non-rellg- feu stance will only confuse im, 2 On the one hand he will think I have to live a hon-relig- ious life, but on the other he will continually look for a religion {usually disguised) | such as Marxism, humanism, fascism, which depreciates all religion, authority and truth but their own, thus providing a religous framework for life. The danger is that the person searching for religious fulfill- ment in a society where religion is ignored or suppressed, all to often find that fulfillment in the Hitlers, Lenins, and Jones of the world, What our society needs today is a call, a clarion call back to the religious realities of > man. We must all be made both aware of our religious nature, and of the religious forces and beliefs active in our world today. And we each must be an to be denigrated, as it will blind humanity to their true situa- tion. The terrible danger here is not so much that they have denied all other religion and truth, but that they have denied their own. Kenneth, a. non-swimmer like his mother, was being dragged _ under by the-violent current. Kenneth’s ‘ terror-stricken pleas of “Mommy, moiitiy!" filled Mrs. Homme's ears as she, stood helplessly on the bank sobbing her heart out. Without warning, Mrs. Homme heard a splash. She whipped around just in time to see her son's pet retriever, Cheasie, ‘paddling frantically against the current to save his young master. Cheasie swam beside Ken- neth (who managed to get a grip on the dog) and then began towing his master to shore. : Kenneth lost his grip and the current began carrying him towards the mouth of a culvert. running beneath a busy high- _ way.
