Gold said about 200 people were d from the Toronto ‘D: Bank and CJOR's FM outlet, JR-Coun- try. They stayed out for about 15 minutes, returning to their jobs about 10 min- utes after the time the caller said the bomb would go off. Gold said both stations switched over to taped music programs while the buildings were evacuated. Police later searched the building but did not find any explosive device. Gold said the bomb threat wasn't taken seriously “but better safe than sorry.” He said after the workers returned, to the building, Watson continued on the open-line program. CATCH IT AT... He was wear. ing a plaid shirt at the time and was about 45 metres — about half the length of a football field — away from his friend. Valu 88 33 66 44 Police increase patrols after death threats CALGARY (CP) — Police have inereased patrols around the home and busi. ness of a drugstore owner accused of murdering a rob- ber, following three death threats to the man’s family. Looking weary, pharmacy owner Steve Kesler, 40, was back at work in his drugstore Tuesday, less than 24 hours after he was released from custody pending his trial. He was released after signing a $5,000 surety promising he would return to court Thursday. Kesler is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death Saturday of Timothy David Smith, 27. A second man who was slightly wounded faces robbery-re- lated charges. A police officer was in the drugstore Tuesday taking reports of death threats re ceived by Kesler's wife, Mary, a pharmacist, who was visibly upset. “We're giving a report to police about life-threatening calls,” Kesler said, adding he and his wife answered threatening phone calls “all night long” Monday at their home. TAKEN SERIOUSLY City police Insp. John Barnes said police are treat ing the calls seriously. Barnes said the Keslers re ceived three phone calls during the early morning hours Tuesday. Police suspect the calls were from the same man The caller, speaking “in a muffled voice,” threatened to “get even,” Barnes said. “He said it might be a tooth for a tooth and eye for an eye sort of thin, He said police are investi- gating and that following the calls, began giving the fam- ily's home and business “special attention” in the form of increased patrols. A defence fund set up for afeway’'s got it Bel-Air Orange Juice Frozen Cc Kesler by in the area of his south Calgary drugstore has raised more than $2,000, a spokesman said. Their goal is $25,000. In Edmonton Tuesday, the president of the Canadian Organization of Small Busi- ness said store owners are sometimes justified in using a firearm in self-defence. TOUGHER PENALTIES Dan Horigan called for tougher penalties for robbers because “the dice are loaded enough” against owners like Kesler. Horigan said criminals must be made to realize that if they break the law there are definite penalties, includ ing getting beaten up or killed in an extreme instance. “If somebody breaks into my house and threatens me with a gun, I think I should have the right to say, ‘Hold it, Charlie,” and defend my self, even to the point, if necessary, of killing some body.” store Horigan added that some merchants would use another mode of defence rather than a firearm, given the choice. But he said they should have some way of defending them selves. Strike could be ended by panel VANCOUVER (CP) — If the four-month strike by 20,000 British Columbia woodworkers is not resolved soon, it could be ended by a government-appointed panel of “non-experts,” says Pre mier Bill Vander Zalm. Vander Zalm said Tuesday he will meet with both sides this week after the strike has been discussed by the cab- imet. The key issue in the dispute is contracting out of work normally peformed by members of the International Woodworkers of America. If his second intervention in the dispute fails to produce a breakthrough, Vander zalm said the two sides “face the possibility of a recom mendation by a panel of non-experts.” The premier said legis lation to end the strike that has crippled dozens of B.C. resource towns would follow if the panel's recommenda tions are not agreed to by the union and Forest Industrial Relations, which bargains for the companies. “There's a great deal of reluctance to legislate them back,” Vander Zalm said. “Unless the (union) members want to go back, we'd get it in the neck from both sides.
