I guess I am one of those who are too old to identify with Thirtysomething. But I trying to make excuses for not atten- ding worship, or something else they feel guilty about.) And my response to such people is, “Good! God doesn’t want you to be religious. God doesn’t want you to get all wrapped up in slavish ob- ‘servance of rituals, religious i and practices, but sim- to see a clip for that episode, ani intrigued me. In this story, Elliot’s wife, Nancy, is fighting a battle with cancer. He loves her deeply and is most distressed, which leads him to do some real soul-searching. As I under- stand it, Elliot is a very secular per- son, a lapsed Roman Catholic, in whose life the church has had little place for quite some time. In his search for answers and help, Elliot goes back to a place which was once meaningful for him — the church. There he says to the priest, Father Tierney, ‘‘I want God, it’s religion that keeps getting in the It is my suspicion that a great many people today can identify with Elliot. They want God, or at least sense a need for God, but don’ t feel i religion, the i: church, to be helpful. They feel it gets in their way. If you are one of those people, may I suggest that your focus, or perhaps the church’s, may have been on the wrong thing — the practice of religion, rather than the person of Jesus Christ. It is not at all surprising that this is unsatisfying. Christianity was never intended to be a system of observances and practices, but a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Frequently, I have had people say to me, ‘I’m really not a religious person.’’ (They usually say this when >) PROCLAMATION EDUCATION WEEK March 4-9, 1991 ; importance of ply to open yourself to His love in Jesus Christ, and to respond joyfully to it. After all, it was the ‘religious’ people who gave Jesus the most trouble."” Many people, like Elliot, have had problems with the church. They feel that instead of helping them to get close to God, its practices, or human weaknesses and failings, have gotten in the way, and put them off. When Elliot shared his feelings with Father Tierney, his priest replied: ‘If you want to come back, you have to come all the way.’’ By this I believe he was saying that if you want to come back to God, just going back to the religious observan- ces won't do. You have to come all the way back and discover the reality of God’s love for you in Christ. To those who feel like Elliot, I would say, ‘‘Good, you are on-the right track.’ The road back begins with that first step — acknowledging your need. The presence of God you're looking for in your life can be found. The church can help you find it. Don’t be put off by the human weaknesses you may see in the chur- ch, (the church is made up of people just as human as anybody else), or by any of its practices which you don't find helpful. Having watched that episode of Thirtysomething, I had to watch the next one, and was.amazed to see Elliot break down (in the men’s washroom of the hospital, of all Places) and promise to do anything God required of him, if his wife could just get well. In that episode she was given a good prognosis. It remains to be seen how Elliot will follow through in his search for God. Will he move for- ward, or lapse into secular indif- ference, now that the pressure is off? But the story gives me hope for all the Elliots of our real world. If you are one of them, I would encourage you to “‘come all the way back, and discover God's love for you.
