More than 130 children joined the library's summer reading Program, Reading Adventures, to spend a lot of their vacation having fun reading. The parade marked the end of the program and heralded World Literacy Day, Sept. 8. This week, the member libraries of Project Literacy West Kootenay are celebrating the growing movement towards Canadian literacy with banners arid displays of literacy materi- als, to show their communities what is available and to publi- cize the fact that, through PLWK, literacy help is at hand. Highways slated for upgrading By CasNews Staff An upgrading of Highways 3 and 22 in Castlegar will begin soon, the project’s manager said today. The construction, to be done by R.W. Blacktop of Kamloops, calls for hot in-place recycling of the existing pavement, which will result in “all the qualities of new pavement but costs about two-thirds less,” said Frank Sawatzky. The construction on Highway 3 will begin at the Castlegar bridge for about 19 kilometres, to the Nancy Greene intersection, Sawatzky said. He said there will be about three kilometres of work done on Highway 22. Sawatzky said most of the work, which he expects to be done by mid-October, will be done on weekends, because of concerns about traffic delays and emissions. “Because material does not have to be hauled, traffic disrup- tions will be greatly reduced,” Sawatzky said. Project Literacy West Koote- nay is a non-profit group work- ing for adult literacy in this area by offering one-to-one tutoring in learners’ own homes or in the libraries. The volunteer tutors are mature adults from all walks of life. The learners are people who may be able to read and write but do not have the skills to cope with day-to-day communication requiring reading and writing. Some may be able to write only their names. Some may be able to read and write but not well enough to qualify for employment training. All are people who want to learn. If you, or someone you know, needs help with these skills, phone the library for more information.
