The church says it is Easter but we all know what season it really is. It's the hockey play off season. Unfortunately the Castlegar Rebels season is over but now it is the time of the big leagues. A couple of years ago a magazine called Rumors carri don't go to hockey games”. It begins, “I've made up my mind never to go to another hockey game. I've attend- ed faithfully for many years but now I've had it. Here are my reasons: 1. I was taken to too many games by my parents when I was small. 2. The games are always played when I want to do something else. 3. Everytime I go to a game, somebody asks for money. 4. The other people who go to games hardly ever speak to me and the coach and players can't remember my name. 5. The seats are toa hard and it's cold. Besides, sometimes I have to sit aan front at the centre line. article entitled, “Why I RO ePrice GRACE PRESBYTERIAN 2605 Columbia Ave. Worship 11:30 a.m. Need a ride to church? Call 365-2438 Rev. The referees say things I don't agree with. 8. The organ plays music I've never heard before. 9. Sometimes games last too long, especially in the play off season and I get home too late. 10. I have a good book about hockey, so I'll just stay home and read it. Come to think of it, I don't go to church for the same reasons.” These excuses sound ridiculous and far fétched when applied to a hockey game, but I'm sure you have all heard them from friends and relatives as reasons why they don't go to church on Sundays. Maybe you've made these same excuses yourself. As excuses go most of these are pretty feeble. If you really want to go to some- g, if it is important to you, having other things on at the same time, or the hard- ness of the eats, or the music that is played has little bearing on whether you show up or not. So what are the real reasons behind the excuses? Why do people find it so difficult to come to church? Why do you? The real reasons are usually much deeper than the ones people give. And it must be admitted, many times the ehurch itself is to blame. It has been irrelevant and out of step with people's lives. Or it has been cruel and harsh in the administration of its rules. Or it has been unfriendly and suspicious of newcomers. And, of course, our society doesn't make it easy to get CASTLEGAR UNITED CHURCH Minister: The Rev. ‘Ann Pollock 10:00 am Worship Service & Sunday School ] CASTLEGAR FULL “FRIDAY, APRIL 15 + 820- + 11:00 PM individual travellers. Pastor Stan Block 365-6317 to church. Life can be very busy for those who are trying to support families and shopping and sports activities compete for one's leisure time even on Sundays. But still, | wonder if these things, too, aren't just excus- es, if the real reason many of us don't go to church or have any time for things of faith is that they don't seem important to us. God and Christ and the Spirit and for- giveness and peace and caring for others and love just don't have much place in our consumer oriented, techno- logical society. Maybe that's why the society is such a mess. As you lie in bed this Sunday morning, contemplating what you'll do for the day, what's you excuse going to be for omitting church from your routine? Is it an excuse that's-really valid? What is really important in your life?
