Regional district board mem- bers decided at last week's regular meeting to invite public discussion of their proposed nine- point position on the provincial environment and land use com- mittee’s plan for subdivision of B.C. A proposed pub- lic forum on burdens faced by city tax- payers is eyed as the setting for the revitalization of the Castlegar Non- Partisan Association, according to Jim Gouk. Two years ago, when the goal was $50,000, nearly $44,000 was raised, Marjorie MacBain, Castlegar United Way secretary-treasurer, told the chamber. But last year, with the same goal, the total raised dropped to $40,000, she said. “There are excuses why we are down, but they are only excuses,"’ MacBain said. ‘The excuses included in- flation, more demands on the dollar and ‘‘the dollar just doesn't go as far as it used to,”* she said. But, she added, those are situations which ex- ist all across the country and therefore do not excuse Castlegar. The problem, MacBain said, stems from a people shortage. The United Way Board consists of 12 mem- bers, ‘and we haven't had a full bourd for two years,” she added. The board currently has 10 members. She said the lack of per- sons ‘twas evident in last year's door-to-door cam- paign. In 1979 a mail-out cam- paign to ail the businesses was conducted instead of the usual door-to-door canvassing but there were not enough people to follow-up the mail- out with personal contact making the soliciting less ef- fective, MacBain added. The money raised by the United Way is divided up be- tween 25 organizations in here and ‘‘everything from tiny children to our senior citizens’’ benefit, she said. Of the approximately 300 United Way chapters across Canada, five of the 16 cities cited were in B.C.
