Hall called the city’s points “very logical.’

“They gave me answers from my heart I could argue,
but from my head I cou!d accept,” he said.

“They've made a lot of valid points,” added Barry Baldi
gara, regional district secretary who is acting as liaison for
the Blueberry fire committee.

But Baldigara refuses to give up.

He said the regional district board has given him the
go-ahead to look at other alternatives, such as contracting
fire protection from the nearby Genelle fire department or
establishing a “satellite” firehall system with Ootischenia
and Robson.

Baldigara said he has spoken with the Kootenay
Boundary Regional District and its regional fire chief about
the newly-built Genelle fire department providing protec
tion.

“They're prepared to sit down and discuss the
possibility,” Baldigara said. “That is a definite possibility.”

As well, Baldigara is investigating linking fire
protection in Blueberry and Fairview with Robson and
Ootischenia.

Baldigara said the proposal would involved constructing
firehalls in Blueberry and Ootischenia, one of which would
house a tanker and the other a pumper.

But Baldigara admitted there could be problems with
providing “backup” service — and that is where the Robson
department would have to be involved.

“There's a lot of work that has to go into it (the
proposal),” said Baldigara.

“There's a lot of things we have to look at,” he said. “We
have to be able to back everybody up.”

And while Baldigara doesn't rule out Blueberry con
structing and equipping a firehall of its own, he says there
are difficulties to overcome.

“Their problem is the tax base,” he says.

There are only 257 properties in Blueberry and about 750
residents. That may not be enough to pay for a new firehal!
and fire equipment.

Baldigara says Area I was able to construct two fire
halls — one at Pass Creek and the other at Tarrys — because
it has the West Kootenay Power Dam on which to draw for
tax support.

Baldigara says Blueberry has only the “bare minimum”
in fire protection now.

Hall agrees.

He says the fire committee has a trailer which was
donated to store hoses and pumps, but no truck or tanker.

THINGS AREN'T always dry at Selkirk College
board meetings. Take for instance the last meeting
Castlegar campus director Jim Cromwell noted in his
report to the board that an article in the latest issue of
Ski featured Red Mountain.

Cromwell pointed out a reference in the article that
“Red is run by a group of locals who form what is known
as the Red Mountain Ski Club and whose average age is
close to 70.”

Commented Cromwell: “The three members of the
college staff who are currently on the executive of the
Red Mountain Ski Club have been asked to confirm their
birthdates!”

EVER WONDERED how Cominco came to use the
elephant as the symbol for its fertilizer operation? The
latest issue of Orbit, the Cominco in-house magazine says:
“It was probably an interest in offshore markets,
especially Asia, that provided the elephant idea.”

An early Cominco Magazine says: “Because a name
would not properly serve to identify the products in lands
where little if any English is spoken or read, it was
necessary to use some sort of symbol as a trademark. The
elephant was chosen to be the symbol and lend its name
to the fertilizer because it is known all over the world

is the company’s best known trademark

Canadian.” Federal officials feel the new theme is less
