This time, Lakusta didn’t get up. “I'm 40-some years old,”’ said Foreman, who at 41 has won 23 straight fights in a comeback that started three years ago. ‘I’m almost 50 and I'm going to be the oldest man in boxing history to regain the world heavyweight championship.”” After Foreman put Lakusta down for the first time, the 35-y: id Ed- promised a shot at the winner of this fall's heavyweight title fight between champion Buster Douglas and Evander monton boxer regained his feet at the end of the count and landed a right hand that staggered Foreman momen- tarily. “It wasn’t that hard but | was sur- prised,’"Baid Foreman, who weighed 261 pounds to Lakusta’s 216. “‘I didn’t think he had any fight left in him. I thought they should hve stop- ped the fight and the next thing you know, he’s swinging at me. “So I went back out there and got everything in order real quick."” Foreman said he has already been Your 1- — TRY OUR — KREEPY KRAULY POOL CLEANER Free use of a video now available Call Gary 365-7389 706 Centre Ave., Blueberry Cr. He joked that an abrasion under- neath his right eye, courtesy of a Lakusta punch, will cause some problems back home in Houston. “My kids are going to tease me,"” he said. ‘‘They’re gonna say, ‘Sumo, you got a scratch.’ "” Lakusta was a game but overmat- ched fighter — in talent, in power, in size. “I’m not happy that I lost, but you just have to go out and do your best,” said the curly haired boxer, who got his start in the ring when he won a tough-guy contest. “IT saw him get mad at me. He really got that look in his eye in the second round On the undercard, Montreal’s Mat- thew Hilton — a former world mid- dleweight champion — won his first fight in three bouts since beginning his comeback attempt last year. In the bashing style that was his trademark during a meteoric rise to the top in 1987, he hammered out a unanimous 10-round decision over Knox Brown of Memphis, Tenn. He landed a big overhand right early in the first round and then con- tinued to pelt Brown with heavy body shots to win an easy decision. Jones Boys Boats P.O. (CP) — to the town to compensate for missed council decided Tuesday night not to sell a disputed piece of land destined for a Mohawk reserve to the federal government until Indian barricades are dismantled. ““We won't sign until the blockades come down,’’ Mayor Jean Ouellette said minutes after a stormy town meeting discussed the deal. Ouellette said he isn’t worried that the council’s decision could prolong the crisis. ‘‘We could sign it and it could still drag on and on.”’ Ottawa has offered $1.34 million for 27 hectares of land that had been slated for expansion of a golf course. Another $2.5 million has been offered The federal government has already paid $1.4 million for 12 hectares of land to Maxime Maurice Rousseau, a French. citizen, which had been marked for residential development. Ouellette, who received a thun- derous standing ovation and cheers as he and his council entered the boiling hot parish Roman Catholic church, had recommended that the deal be ac- cepted. But several of the more than S00 residents at the meeting objected when they were told that the removal of the barricades would not be part of the deal. “If we're ready to make a con- Mill workers call strike MONTREAL (CP) — Workers at two mills in Quebec have gone on strike to win shorter working hours and better vacation pay as signs mount that it may be a bumpy road to labor peace in Eastern Canada’s pulp and paper industry. About 1,200 workers at Quebec and Ontario Paper Co. in Baie- Comeau, Que., and 420 workers at James MacLaren Industries in Masson, Que., walked out after the companies rejected a bid last week for 20-per-cent more vacation pay and a half-hour cut in work hours for dayshift tradesmen, such as elec- tricians. The dispute marks a sharp split among the four-member Eastern Canada Newsprint Group which has bargained jointly for more than three decades. Two companies in the 3,300- employee group — Daishowa Paper Mfg. Co. Ltd. in Quebec City and Domtar Inc. in Dolbeau — have ac- cepted the demands of locals of the Canadian Paperworkers Union. MacLaren has said it wants to bargain separately with its workers and quit the Eastern Canada group. But the union has said it will only bargain with MacLaren as part of the group, said MacLaren spokesman Normand Chenail. Central bargaining by the group was expected to begin in August on the basis of the model settlement reached by the union with Stone- Consolidated Inc. The agreement, which won only 56.4-per-cent approval from the 2,300 Stone workers in eastern Quebec, calls for annual wage increases of 5.5 per cent over three years. “In return, the union agreed to let mills operate on two statutory holidays and repairman perform variety of tasks on night shifts.
