ja BS Saturday, October 19, 1991 a THE VALHALLA SOCIETY If you still wish to still catch the glorious golden col- ors of the West Kootenay au- tumn, try hiking from the ghost town of Sandon to Three Forks on one of B.C.’s few developed rails-to-trails projects. It’s best to start at the in- terpretive kiosk at Sandon and drive the first two kilo- metres on the 6ld Kaslo-Slo- can narrow gauge railroad grade to the start of the trail. The level trail takes you along three kilometres of mountainside to the site of the historic Payne bluffs, with pictorial interpretive signs to explain this locale as well as the early Payne Mine concentrator and the Viola Mac Mine. Breath-taking vistas of surrounding mountain peaks unfold at each bend on this easy walk. If you wish to end your hike at Three Forks, a 1.4-kilometre 1890's pack trail has been rehabilitated which takes you down from the railroad grade to the in- terpretive kiosk on Highway 31A, Mountain bikes are suit- able for only part of the K&S Trail. Once winter snows deepen, it is also suitable for Nordic skiing although late winter use is discouraged due to minor avalanche hazards and to avoid disturbing win- tering moose. When this narrow-gauge railway first reached the sil- ver mining town of Sandon in 1895, Colone Lowery, a local Hiking trails allow enjoyment of autumn newspaper editor, wrote that the celebration should in- clude a fight between a rival editor and a Florida alligator, though “we could substitute a big grizzly bear for an alliga- tor, and have a bear dance.” Rivalry was 80 bad be- tween the CPR and the U.S.- owned K&S Railroad that when the latter built its new depot in Sandon, the K&S hooked a cable around it and pulled it down with its loco- motive, claiming the was on their land. A train ride around the precipitous Payne bluffs was so frightening that Lowery wrote that “if you are nervous you are liable, when passing over this point, to reach for your hair and hold it down.” The little K&S carried 28,000 people in the first year of operation, but snow, land- slides and poor silver metal markets caused problems. The K&S Railroad historic trail was first developed in 1984 by the Valhalla Society Churches to focus on peace In some of our churches to- morrow, we shall be focusing on peace in response to the Canadian Council of Church- es’ recognition of the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations on Oct. 24,1945. What is the Christian con- cept of peace, and how does it differ, if it does, from a secular view of peace? The Christian concept of peace traces its roots to the Hebrew concept of “Shalom.” Shalom does not translate easily into English. It is an un- derstanding of peace that in- Pulpit & Pew St. David's Anglican Church The Rev. Dorothy BARKER cludes ment and rest. It is wholeness of men and women in their ly. To be “righ ” is not simply to live a moral life, ships, individ and relationship to the created order. Society and nature are joined in covenant with God. All peace is of God and the condition of peace is the pres- ence of God. hie veasen ob e peaceable 9 pte pe 7. ap asinthe words of: Isaiah in with God, one another and the whole of creation.
