Steve continued to be. in and out of trouble for the next nine years, lls most serious brush with the law occurred when he beat and almost killed a woman in a Chicago suburb. Only the intervention of passers-by saved the woman's life. The 20 year old was sent away for another of his'many short. stints in prison. In March, 1977, he was paroled after serving only 20 months. A month after his release, Steve robbed a woman and spent another year in prison. On April 28, 1979, two men searching for wild mushrooms along White Lick Creek outside Indlanapo- lis, Indiana, stumbled across several articles of women’s clothing near the bank of the creek. As they followed the trail of clothing, they came upon the nude body of a woman. Her legs rested on the creek bank, while the rest of her body was submerged. Within minutes, the area was swarming with Indiana State Troop- ers, who went about securing the crime scene. Det. Sgt. Jerry Conner interviewed the-two men who. had found the body and then proceeded to walk downstream from the foca- sata sein nomanlg 7 ' lon where the body had been dls- covered, Later, he would say he was looking for ony other clothin, ‘belonging to the dead woman. Steve was taken into custody and it had taken tess horrendous discovery when detec- tives, who had continued to walk downstream, came across another child's body. The small boy had washed up on a sandy outcropping. Police scanned the area. Unbeliev- ably, from where they stood beside the [lttle boy's body, they were able to see the body of yet another child. What monster had snuffed out the lives of four individuals ond what reason could anyone have for killing three children, all under six years of age? A pretiminat of the than 36 hours to home in on their chief suspect, 1 Initially, Steve, on the advice of his lawyer, wouldn't talk about the ; erlme. Authorities went about build- ing a case against the vicious young crimlnal. Tests proved that Steve's blood type was compatible with semen stains found on Terry's cloth- ing. Threads taken from Steve's clothing matched threads from Terry’s blouse. Casts of tire tracks lifted from the murder scene were the same as the tire tracks of Steve's pickup truck. bodies revealed that the woman had been raped and strangled. The chil- dren had no marks of violence on thelr bodies. All three had drowned in Mis swirling waters of White Lick reek. From a bankbook found at the scene, the woman was identified as Terry Chasteen. The three little vic- .ims were her children. Terry regu- larly drove her children to a baby sitter’s before continuing on to work ata local grocery store. She hadn't shown up for work that day, - Terry had a boyfriend who was‘ genulnely shocked to learn of her eath, He cooperated fully with investigating officers and it was he who was as! to officlally identify the bodies. On the way to the mor- tuary, he shouted out to necompany a ing police, ‘That's Terry's car!" By blind luck, the victim's distinctive bright red vehicle had been found. Terry's boyfriend later tdentified her body and those of her three children, Misty Ann, 5; Stephen Michael, 4; and Mark Lewis, 2. Terry was only 22 years old at the ime of her death and was divorced from the children's father, who was in the U.S. Navy. Police solicited the public's assis- tance. They asked anyone who had been near Highway 67 and White Lick Creek that morning to contact the Indiana State Police. Scores of calls were received. One caller reported that he and his young son hed driven across the bridge over White Lick Creek before 8 a.m. They had noticed a distinctive! painted red and silver pickup truck parked down an access road. Police put out a bulletin to adjoin- ing states describing the conspicu- ous vehicle. But it wasn't necessary. Once again, by coincidence, the truck was located. She complied in silence and was raped, Suddenly, she screamed hysterically. Steve ripped away a iece of her clothing and stuffed it her mouth before strangling his helpless victim. The children ran toward their mother’s screams. One by one, Steve picked them up and threw them the creek, where they drowned.
