Wednesday, May 31, 1995 SCHOOL DISTRICT New process for challenging books KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff The Castlegar school district has a new policy which will allow learning materials used in schools to be challenged. Superintendent Everette Surgenor said the policy was developed because until now there was no written directive regarding such concerns. “It is a, process we should have had in place. Now if any-~ one has concerns they can be adequately addressed,” Surgenor said that the move into the electronic age opens sion of the challenged material which might be followed with a written complaint if an agree- ment can't be reached. The complaint will be for- warded to the superintendent who will then form a review “committee which will censist of: @ school trustee; the superinten- dent;-a school principal other than the one involved in the dis- pute; the complainant or his/her nominee; one librarian from a school other than the one involved in the dispute; one par- ent from the District Parent Advisory Council The committee will make a ree jon to the school doors of more acc y to learning materials. This, he believes, is one of the driving forces behind the policy. “The issues of censorship are before us these days.” board. The complainant will have the right to appeal the decision to the board. The policy also allows that material under challenge will be withdrawn from use until a Wednesday, May 31, 1995 The Castlegar Sun Page 13B. Snow job What's up?
