Although th2 celebration has been hampered by spirit of the day is evident on every thoroughfare, and decorations of bunting and evergreens have array- ed the streets in holiday. attire. The general cessation of business gave evidence of thé extent to which or-) ganized labor has implanted itself in Rossland and of the strength and support it receives from the rank and -file. Every class of labor in this city is organized, with, regular hours of labor, and, in many in- stances increased pay, as a result. Unionism has bettered the condition of the masses, and so long as it is fostered with fair regard for the in- terests of employer and employed alike, it will continue in the better- ment of the condition of all con- cerned. ——— —_—_—_ The townsite rivalry between Grand Forks and C bia has, as Cooks’ and U.. meets ROSSLAND LABOR UNION. 8:80 at Sliner’s “nla Hall, P. Disclosures of a sensational character, implica- ting prominent citizens of Grand Forks, are inti cipaced, and, already ugly ruuors are abroad, Robert Cameron admits having received $2,000 for doing the job, and says Charles Mullen gave him the money. Mullen, it ls known, was a financial wreck, and the question is, “Who gave him so large a sum for such a purpose?” A long term of impris- onment awaits somebody, and it is said that as high as $50,000 bail has been refused those now in custody. —— With the wind in this direction, Rossland yesterday enjoyed the full benefit of the stench from the burn- ing of the garbage heap below town. The odor was anything but pleasant, and numerous complaints were made. Immediate steps should be taken to remedy the evil. —— Up near Ponca, Neb., lives a man who is aoted for his absent- mindedness. A recent visitor from there declares this story is told and believed among his neighbors: “He was over at our house one evening when a heavy rain; set in, and he was invited to stay all[night rather than take the drenching he ‘would get on the half mile trip home. He accepted the invitation. Later, he took his hat and stepped out of the house. Ina shortRtime he came in again, bearing a bundle under his arm. He explained by saying: ‘I didn’t want to give you folks too much bother, and so I ‘thought I would jest get my own nightshirt, and I have been over to the house after it.’ And there never was any indication in his manner that he realized the rediculousness of the trip under the circumstances.” INTERNATIONAL MUSIC HALL. LATE HAPPENINGS .IN ROSSLAND Nows Notes of People Coming and Going and What They Have to Say of Their Travels | | —Other Items of Iaterest. Mr. C. Wolfle returned < last evening from Wild Horse creek, in the Ymir district, where he had been for the past week looking after the wurk on the Rainy Day claim, one of the Gold Reef Mining and Milling Company's properties. The foreman in charge of the development work sent in some ore samples of a recent find and re- ported the strike of-a new ledge. Assays were made of the ore brought down and it averaged $40 in gold. Picked samples run from $250 to $800. : The Rainy Day property is ‘situ- ated on Wild Horse creek, about eight miles from Ymir. and about three miles from the Wilcox mine. The original location was made in the spring of 1897 by Mr. Wolfle, and has been held since by him. A shaft 35 feet deep has. been sunk on one ledge, the ledge ‘matter being free milling quartz and having good shipping values from the ‘surface. There are two distinct ledges .on the property, each having well de- fined walls. Ledge No. 1 is 334 feet wide, and No. 2 is somewhat over eight feet wide. This year a company, ~ composed entirely of Ressland gentlemen, was orga- nized_to handle the property, and development work has been going on ever since with excellent results. Winter quarters are being com- pleted, and new roads to connect with the Government road -at; the .Wilcox, will ibe finished before the snow flies. The.ore is on exhibition in the ‘office of W. H. Danby, of this city, who is-secretary of the company. Large quantities of free gold can be plainly seen in the quartz, and a sample of crushed and washed ore shews a good half ounce of pure gold.
