University of Guelph horticulture professor Alan Sullivan and graduate student Jean-Pierre Priv are part of an international team of scientists from Canada, the U.S., Australia and England conducting experiments on the “autumn berries,” according to a university news release. Instead of maturing in July like conventional raspberries, fall-bear- ing raspberries grow through the summer and are ready for harvesting between late August and mid-Sep- tember, depending on their growing location. “Consumer demand fof raspber- ries is extremely high,” said Sullivan, ‘and even in a good growing year, supply is low. notice and govern himself according! Canada Poll predicts close election VANCOUVER (CP) — The New Democratic Party expects to take at least 20 of 32 seats in British Columbia in the Nov. 21 federal election, says provincial campaign manager Ron Johnson. “We think we can be competitive with the Tories in every single seat,” Johnson said. “That's not to claim we're going to win every seat in the province. That will be for the voters to determine.” The party currently has eight seats in British Columbia, with the Progressive Conservatives holding 19 and the Liberals one — Opposition Leader John Turner's Vancouver Quadra riding. Redistribution has added four seats since the 1984 election. An Angus Reid Associates national poll released last week indicated the Tories had 41 per cent support among decided voters in British Columbia, the NDP 39 per cent and the Liberals 15 per cent. The poll was considered accurate within 2.5 percentage points 95 per cent of the time. Smaller provincial samples generally have wider margin of error. Johnson said the NDP plans to mount serious campaigns not only in marginal ridings where the outcome is in doubt, but also in Conservative st holds such as the Ok Valley and the Vancouver suburbs of Richmond and Delta. NO CHANGE Tory campaign chairman Jane Frost said there will be no change in Tory election strategy because Prime ister Brian Mulroney has done a find job. “We've been preparing for this campaign since the spring of 1987 and we're done that by working with all of our ridings and at the same time working with Ottawa,” said Frost, who expects her party to hold its seats and even pick up more. Even the NDP’s main rivals to displace the Tory majority in the province concede the socialist party's But Russ Brink, Liberal campaign chairman, said his party sees itself starting the campaign ahead of the governing Conservatives. “There's 32 ridings that we might win in this province,” Brink said. “T'm not at this stage going to start picking and choosing which ones are FaLcon PAINTING & DECORATING 49 FOURTH 26 pce CASTLE GAR vIn 2st Gary Fleming Dianne Kootnikoff ADVERTISING SALES 300? C STLEGAR NEWS eal OFFICE 365-5210 AVENUE 365-3563 more favorable. We'll be putting an all-out campaign in every one of those seats.” Brink said free trade will be a major issue in the election. Soft fruit and grape growers in Interior British Columbia and truck farmers and berry growers in the Fraser Valley expect to be hit, hard by the Canada-U.S. free-trade deal. WILL BE FOCUS The economy also is expected to be a focus of the campaign. While it is improving in the Vancouver and Vic. tor areas, unemployment is still high in the Interior. “There will probably be’ some concern with environmental issues, for example, and some greater concern with day care,” Brink said. Bills to implement free trade and increase day-care spaces died when the election was called Saturday. Both bills were before the Senate. Liberal senators, who have a majority in the upper chamber, said on request from Turner that they wouldn't pass the bill until a general election had been held. Johnson said the Tories have been scrambling to mask what he des. cribed as their ineffectiveness in the last few weeks. “But I think certainly that the voters are looking at the Mulroney governing and saying, ‘did we get what we expected in 1984,’ and the answer is no.” One of the NDP's big guns will be Dave Barrett, a former premier of British Columbia who plans to run in the new Vancouver Island riding of Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca. 4 Chevron Canada and “Town Pantry” Cranbrook. following qualities: RETAILER OPPORTUNITY Limited, Columbia's leading retailers of motor gasolines, offers a business opportunity to an individual interested in operating a retail gasoline outlet convenience store in one of British Interested individuals should possess the Excellent interpersonal skills An understanding of and ability to handle merchandising An abundance of enthusiasm coupled with a commitment to teamwork and customer service Past and proven experience managing a retail business ® Sound financing 668-5576 in Vancouver.
