Cutbacks anger, dismay district schools’ staff By CasNews Staff Castlegar school board chairman Gordon Turner said today school district staff are disappointed and angry over $543,900 in cutbacks the board must make for the next school year. enrolment in the fall. If there is an increase in the num- ber of students, the board will review the cutbacks and reinstate funding where it can, Turner said. Superintendent of schools Terry Wayling said the board will cut 1.4 full-time eq teachers. “They're from the board's perspective (the district) will run at a reasonable level,"’ Turner said. But ‘“‘it’s not going to run at ao excellent level because of these cuts,”” he added. However, the cuts may not be as deep as expected when district staff do a head count of students in the fall, Turner said, Funding from the Ministry of Education is provided as a “block”? based on the projected number of students in a district. The ministry has allocated funding for 38 students too many — about $225,000 — but the board hasn't in- cluded that money in its budget and won't until it has exact enrolment figures, The board expects increased “It’s certainly our hope we won't have to reduce anybody, that at- trition will take care of staffing,’’ he said ‘‘But there will be less service for kids in some areas.’” The board will also reduce non- teaching staff by 2.5 full-time equivalent positions. Wayling said the board is con- sidering cutting a full-time main- tenance position to half-time and may marginally cut the time of teaching assistants working with students with special needs. The board will also cutback on ex- tra-curricular activities such as field trips and other travel, equipment purchases and replacements, supplies and professional development programs. Like Semenoff, Berg still believes the college isn’t getting the best value for its money. “It’s not so much that they didn't chose the local company, I just feel our package is the better package,’ Berg said. ‘It’s a question of giving the best value. We had the best value and we're still not getting (the con- tract).”” The college will own and operate the residences and is borrowing the money to build the facility from the provincial government. The residences will be located at the south end of the college, beside the soccer field and towards the Columbia River.
