Residents place their clean tin cans, glass, old sulted in a lower level of com- mitment by householders since they then have to sort and keep recyclables in their homes for — periods between pick- <3 also means that if you for- get the schedule your blue box may be left full on the curb if you put the wrong material out on pickup day. Some other problems include the fact that paper may be ruined if left out in the sun or rain. Also, ifnon- ls are left in and so on into the boxes and set them out on the curb on garbage day. The plastic boxes are a distinctive deep blue col- or and have a “recycling” logo on them. The material in these boxes is handled separately from the other garbage. Members of the Recycle Ad- visory Group has mixed feel- ings about a blue box for the Castlegar area. We've had an opportunity to see what other communities are experi- encing and to learn from their mistak. 28. From a householder’s point of view, blue boxes would be quite convenient, since people could dispose of their recy- clables without leaving their homes. On the other hand, it would cost a lot of money to set up the program. Each home would need at least one blue box, and the blue boxes they would have to be sorted and separated. Some municipalities have trek would be required for would likely be the most cost- ly aspect of all. The people who go from house to house to col- lect the material would have to sort the items from the blue boxes. into the appropriate compartments in the truck. It’s quite time consuming, and therefore very expensive, since we all have to pay their wages to do so. Some communities have set up schedules so with private collec- tors who only wish to take the highest grades of recyclable materials. Perhaps a better way to go for our community would be to have several convenient super- vised drop-off depots. The loca- tions might best be near gro- cery stores and other places of business where we'd be going anyways. We'd do our own sorting, and could drop materials off in amounts that were convenient for us, with depot hours similar i hours. are picked up one week, glass the following week, then tin cans, and so on.
