Saturday, June 13, 1992 m @ Castlegar must begin to help its less fortunate I noticed that the more I know from God’s handbook on life —the Bible — the harder it becomes to live in my safe little world, ignoring the needs of people around me. “Oh no!” you say, “I can see what’s coming. Another ap- peal for money!” No, not at all, I simply want to talk about one oppor- tunity to reach out in com- passion to our community. It may be hard for some to come to terms with the facts, but as you read this there are fellow human being in Castle- gar who are hungry and are without the means to satisfy that hunger. We are not just talking about irresponsible people who are foolish in their choic- es — we speak of families, Pulpit & Pew Castlegar Full Gospel Rev. Stan BLOCK Fellowship single parents with children, young people, senior citizens and many others who don’t fit into a defined group. We are not called to judge, we are called to help. In yy work as a pastor in Castlegar, I meet many peo- ple in need and the majority are even reluctant to mention their lack. They desire to im- prove their situation but it can be very hard to even think straight when the cup- boards are bare and the stom- ach empty. We must help. Concerned people met on June 10 at Community Ser- vices to begin the work of es- tablishing a food bank. As this becomes a reality much will be required, loca- tion, volunteers, overseers, fi- nances and of course food. It will take your involve- ment, everyone to see this work. Galatians 6:9 says: ‘Let us not be weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.’ We cannot afford to take the attitude “Oh somebody else will do it.” Somebody else is not doing it. Will you consider what you could do? And then watch the newspaper for further infor- mation. Over 20 people involved in literacy inthe area — tutors, learners, board members and co-ordinators — attended to listen to progress reports from the area co-ordinator, Sue Port, and chairperson, Wendy Tagami and to hear guest speaker, Patti Bossort talk about fund- ing. Last year, PLWK held five 16 hour tutor training courses, training a total of 54 tutors, in Nelson, Trail, Nakusp and Castlegar. Forty-three learners were matched with tu- tors; Castlegar had 13 new matches. PLWK’s literacy resource collection con- sisting of 660 volumes of 288 titles was dis- tributed among 11 West Kootenay libraries and a bibliography of the holdings plus source information was printed. This is available to libraries and other literacy groups. _ Sue Port praised the WK libraries, espe- cially the Castlegar Library, for their co-op- eration and contribution to the success of Wendy Tagami commented that over the two years of its operation PLWK has trained 80 tutors and matched over 60 pairs of tutors and ‘learners. During that time, it has oper- ated with the financial support of a govern- ment cost-shared grant and support in kind from Selkirk College. As there will be no more grant support, the society will be looking for corporate and community sponsorship to car- ry on its valuable work. Patti Bossort, one-time president of the Adult Basic Education Association of B.C. and now a private consultant, told the meeting of other-successful literacy projects operating without grant money but with college support. Following the presentations of literacy pins tothe tutors present and a West Kootenay Li- brary Association gift to Sue Port, the evening rounded off with a reception provided by PLWK board members and staff. fi Julie Spurrell for her years of dedicated service. The Castlegar library played host to the Project Literacy West Kootenay's annual general meeting Monday.
