MCINTOSH DECLINES. On another page will be ~ found Lieutenant Governor MclLutosh’s declination of the proffered honor ofthe nomination to the high posi- tion. of mayor-of the ‘city of Ross- land. ‘Vhis answer wis ready for the : public: yesterday morning but was “withheld from the Recorp, al- though given tou the Miner before noon yesterday. The public would have appreciated the information much more had the reply been published last night. Governor McIntosh’s reasons fur declining the proffered honor up- hold the Recorp iu the stand it has taken on the situation from the start'and common courtesy both to the people of Rossland and the Recorp. would suggest that this re- -ply be given outtou the Recorp as goou as it was ready for pubiication. Governor McIntosh’s reasons fur declinivg are souid. His anxiety that the bill of incorporation be passed without delay is acquiesced in by the Recorp, and is no doubt the sentiment of 211 Rossland. Any amendments to the bill of incor- poration as now before the legis- lature would necessarily delay its passage and retard operations for the drainage of the city so necessary to be begun at once. His reply contains a few sentences of wholesome advice that may, if followed, prove valuable incentives to good civic government. To ex- clude sectional and personal proju- dices means to unite all the forces of the city and in unity there _is strength. There should no be no further laughter, 00 and it was carried amid applause and oo THE SLOCAN COUNTRY. A Spicy Budget of Mining and Other News. — Kas.o, Jan, 15.—(Special Corres- pondence to the Recorp)—Leaving the bustling, busy streets of Ross- land, one is somewhat surprised at the excessive quietness of the older towns of Nelson and Kaslo. How- ever, I find upon investigation that a large amount of business is transacted iu a quiet way, with a prospect, dur- ing the coming summer of a large sized boom. Nelson, which is well provided with transportation facilities, isa sortof supply point for the vast surrounding country and bonsts of a number of prosperous job! ing houses. The prime topic of interest there just now isthe incorporation of the city, and there is little doubt about the bill going speedily throngh the legislature enabling her to form a new city govern- ment early this spring, and it is then the ambition of Nelson to become the capital of east Kootenay. as it prac- tically is now.
